It's best that we forget, we never look at all
But looking out in the forest of place,
I think about you then
How did I forget you for so long,
You should have commenced,
Rather than hold on
God bless surrounded, I'm all your things
Thought I had moved on
Tried to make ends meet,
But picked up a new beat and so I lay a song
But even thought they fall into place
I think about you then
I know
oh, oh, oh, oh
I know I forget
If I was alone,
You should have commenced
Rather than hold on
You should have commenced
Rather than hold on
Don't forget, don't forget, don't forget, don't forget,
Don't forget, don't forget, don't forget, don't forget
The lyrics to Toro y Moi's song "New Beat" are filled with introspective musings about a lost love. The first verse begins with the singer acknowledging that what they had with their ex-partner was "off" and that it's best to forget it and move on. However, when looking out into the peaceful setting of the forest, the singer cannot help but think of their lost love. They then question how they could forget the person for so long and wish that they had tried harder to make it work.
The second verse reveals that the singer has tried to move on and make ends meet but has picked up a "new beat." They have been inspired to create new music and have laid down a song. However, even with this creative outlet and something new falling into place, the singer cannot help but still think of their lost love.
The chorus repeats the line "I know," with the implication being that the singer knows they should have ended things sooner rather than holding on. The repeated plea of "don't forget" at the end of the song signifies the singer's desire to hold onto the memory of their lost love despite knowing it's best to move on.
Overall, the lyrics to "New Beat" are a poignant exploration of the difficulty of letting go of a past love, even when it feels like the best thing to do.
