The Times They Are A-Changing
Tracy Chapman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now

Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

Overall Meaning

Tracy Chapman's cover of Bob Dylan's iconic protest song "The Times They Are A-Changin'" captures the essence of the political and social climate of the 1960s. The song's opening verse attempts to instill a sense of urgency and warning amongst the listeners; the waters are rising, and the times are changing. Chapman sings, "And admit that the waters around you have grown, and accept it that soon you'll be drenched to the bone. If your time to you is worth savin', then you better start swimmin' or you'll sink like a stone for the times they are a-changin'."

The song has different verses that address various people: writers and critics, senators and congressmen, and finally, mothers and fathers. In these verses, Chapman urges them to pay heed to the signs of change, not be left behind, and not to stall the change that is evidently at the door. The chorus of the song reiterates the change as inevitable with the iconic line, "For the times they are a-changin'."

The song's lyrics reflect not only the political upheaval and transformation that occurred during the 1960s but also the wider sense of countercultural revolution that characterized the era. Chapman's cover honors the original song's sentiment and highlights how it remains as relevant today as it was when it was written over 60 years ago.

I lover her version. She has a very unique voice and I love it.

Phoenix Noiré

It'd be even better if it were her version and not just her singing Bob Dylan's version

whooo hoo I remember I had gotten Tracy's first debut major album after she sang on corners ( near her hometown for YEARS surely brilliant ) right about the time I saw her perform this bob dylan reworked tribute to peace justice change and hope , he wrote many years before my birth and Chapman's ...I sang it in 1999 and it led me to finally become a public singer in 99' as I was hiding my voice for years before...her work still blows my mind and I named her song CHANGE as my fav all time tune ever in my sacramento Sammie award interview after being nominated...biggest music award in the capitol of state with most Americans but all my producers have grammies so I'm gonna work on more record label supported releases ...I hid away staying low profile, after fame tried eat me alive haha ...but tracy reminds me as does Bob Dylan...fear is a lie when it's not helping our safety ! change for all is coming happens everyday so I'm gonna get more adept at PIVOTTING ! thank u Tracy Chapman and Bob Dylan for your incredibly supportive music for humanity to progress and feel humane, love freedom hope pain sorrow rebirth and redemption , too!! just like Tracy's song says "song title - first try-'can't run can't fly can't take the limits of this ordinary life but it's a first try" "....
