Our New Year
Transit Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
and I'll picture you're doing the same.
dressed up with somewhere else to be.
I hope he says that he loves you.
I hope you see it in his eyes.
I hope his shoulder is softer than mine.
I hope that he's better than me.
It's one thing to ruin these songs for me,
those songs that still rot in my ears
but you've ruined places that I used to love and live to forget.
It's one thing to ruin this song for me,
this song it still rots in my ears
and you've ruined these places that I used to love and now live to forget.
because in this city of potholes and rooftops
the people they live to forget and drink to forgive
I guess that nobody wins.
Is this the happiest you've ever been.
I hope that it is.
Is this the happiest you've ever been
I guess that nobody wins.
Is this the happiest you've ever been.
Oh god I hope that it is.
Is this the happiest you've ever been.
I guess that nobody wins.
Oh god I hope that it is.
Is this the happiest you've ever been.
nobody wins.
The first verse of Transit's "Our New Year" paints a picture of longing and heartbreak. The singer is on a train late at night, heading home, and imagining that the person they are missing is doing the same thing. The implication is that they used to share these kinds of intimate moments but now they are both alone. The singer imagines the person they are missing with someone else, dressed up and on their way somewhere. The hope is that the new person in their life is treating them better than the singer did. The chorus repeats the idea that nobody really wins in these kinds of situations, but it also asks a poignant question: "Is this the happiest you've ever been?" The hope here is that the person the singer is addressing has found true happiness, even if it's without them.
The second verse expands upon the theme of ruin and loss. The singer admits that it's one thing to have their favorite songs ruined by memories of the person they're missing, but it's another thing entirely to have whole places and experiences marred by the knowledge that the person they love is no longer with them. This could be interpreted as being about a relationship that ended badly, but it could also be read as a song about nostalgia and the ways that our past romantic experiences can color our present lives. Overall, "Our New Year" is a sad and introspective track that grapples with themes of loss, regret, and the passage of time.
