After their 1999 debut Anchor, the band released Different Stars in 2002. It caught the attention of Cocteau Twins bassist Simon Raymonde, who signed the band to his record label Bella Union, and re-released it with a new tracklisting. The band moved to Seattle to make their third album, 2006's Having. After the EPs Noble House (2007) and The Natural Order of Things (2009), the band entered a period of silence and ultimately disbanded owing to tensions between Williams and Brown. They reunited in 2020 to release the single "Winterstorms".

Ledge
Trespassers William Lyrics

That's doing this
Love's a window ledge
You're talking me down from it
Like you can talk it away
If I say this once
Don't talk me out of this
You talk me out of everything
You're gently wearing me down
For you I'll play along
It's common as waking up
We'll blow it away
I'll give it up quietly
It's nothing
It's nothing, yet it's all right
The lyrics to Trespassers William's song "Ledge" speak of a relationship that has taken a dark turn. The singer feels as if they are standing on a "window ledge" and their partner is trying to talk them down. The metaphor highlights the danger and precariousness of the situation, as well as the power dynamic between the two individuals. The singer recognizes that their partner has a hold on them and can "talk [them] out of everything," yet they still cling to this relationship because it feels familiar and safe. They are willing to "play along" and ignore the warning signs in order to avoid upheaval or loneliness.
The second verse underscores the singer's resignation to their partner's influence. They will give up quietly and pretend like everything is okay, even though they know deep down that it is not. The final line, "It's nothing, yet it's all right," is a poignant and contradictory statement, revealing the conflicting emotions the singer feels. On the one hand, they recognize that this relationship is harming them in some way, yet on the other hand, they feel like they have no other choice but to stay.
Overall, "Ledge" is a haunting and introspective song about the complexities of love and power dynamics in relationships. It highlights the ways that we can sometimes stay in toxic situations because they are familiar or because we are afraid of being alone.
