After their 1999 debut Anchor, the band released Different Stars in 2002. It caught the attention of Cocteau Twins bassist Simon Raymonde, who signed the band to his record label Bella Union, and re-released it with a new tracklisting. The band moved to Seattle to make their third album, 2006's Having. After the EPs Noble House (2007) and The Natural Order of Things (2009), the band entered a period of silence and ultimately disbanded owing to tensions between Williams and Brown. They reunited in 2020 to release the single "Winterstorms".

Matching Weight
Trespassers William Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We don't have a lot to go on
But that's not how it lives in my head
No, not at all
Blind times
Thought we were matching weight
We pulled
But where are we
You say "don't take it all so hard for now
There's so much space
And there will always be later for that"
In "Matching Weight," Trespassers William sings about a relationship that appears to be on the verge of falling apart. The song begins with the singer acknowledging that they do not have a lot to go on. However, the singer also admits that their perception of the relationship is different from what it actually is, as they live in their head. The lyrics suggest that the singer is struggling to come to terms with their reality, and is perhaps in denial about the true state of their relationship.
The second verse of the song takes a turn as the singer reflects on the times when they felt like they were both carrying the same weight in the relationship. However, this feeling did not last, and now the singer is questioning where they stand in the relationship. The chorus features the other person in the relationship telling the singer not to take it all so hard and to remember that there is still space between them, and that there is the possibility for things to improve in the future.
Overall, "Matching Weight" conveys the frustration and anguish of a relationship that is falling apart. The lyrics suggest that the singer is struggling to accept the reality of the situation, and holding onto the hope that things will get better. The song's slow and melancholic melody complements the theme of heartbreak and the sense of longing for something that might not be attainable.
