I Got A Girl
Tripping Daisy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got a girl who lives with me
I got a girl, she smells so sweetly
I got a girl, she loves her dog
I got a girl, I love her dog too
I got a girl who stares in the mirror
I got a girl who blames it on her period
I got a girl, she is so right
I got a girl, she's my guiding light

Well I know what I need
And I feel we're going higher and higher
Well I know what I need
And I feel we're going higher and higher

I got a girl who loves good soul
I got a girl who dances to disco
I got a girl who wears cool shoes
I got a girl who wears them in the nude

I got a girl who speaks her mind
I got a girl, she'll argue anytime
I got a girl, she is so small
I got a girl, she'll knock down any wall

Well I know what I need
And I feel we're going higher and higher
Well I know what I need
And I feel we're going higher and higher

Get a load of this
She's always bitching at me when I'm feeling down
Asking questions with her little frown
I can't take much much more of this
I'm out, I'm out, I'm out, I'm out, I'm
Get a load of this
She's always bitching at me when I'm feeling down
Asking questions with her little frown
I can't take much much more of this
I'm out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out

I got a girl I love to kiss
I got a girl I never want to miss
I got a girl who's my best friend
I got a girl that won't even hold my hand

I got a girl that makes me laugh
I got a girl, I'll make her laugh too
I got a girl, she has girlfriends
I got a girl, I like her girlfriends

Well I know what I need
And I feel we're going higher and higher
Well I know what I need
And I feel we're going higher and higher

Well I know what I need (I need)
And I feel we're going higher and higher
Well I know what I need
And I feel we're going higher and higher

I got a girl
I got a girl

I got a girl
And she's got a guy

Overall Meaning

The song “I Got A Girl” by Tripping Daisy is a tribute to a girl the singer is in love with. The song begins with the singer listing the great qualities the girl possesses, such as how sweetly she smells and how much she loves her dog. He even loves her dog too. The girl may have a few flaws, as she stares at herself in the mirror and blames it on her period, but the singer still thinks she’s so right and his guiding light.

As the song progresses, the singer reveals more about the girl’s interests and characteristics. She loves good soul and dances to disco music. She wears cool shoes and sometimes even wears them in the nude. The girl speaks her mind and argues whenever she wants. She may be small, but she’s strong enough to knock down any wall.

The chorus repeats the phrase “Well I know, I need, I feel we're going higher and higher” which indicates that the relationship between the singer and the girl is progressing and growing stronger. However, towards the end of the song, the lyrics suggest that things may not be going so well. The girl is always “bitching” and asking questions with a little frown when the singer is feeling down. He can’t take much more of this and is out. Then, the song takes a surprising turn, as the singer reveals that the girl actually has a guy, despite all the things he said about her.

Overall, “I Got A Girl” is a catchy and upbeat song that is both a love letter and a departure from the typical love songs that only focus on one side of a relationship. The song acknowledges that relationships are complex and can have highs and lows, but ultimately, the singer still appreciates the girl for who she is.

I lived across the street from them when I was a little boy. From 92-2001
They would open up their windows and practice and play music every Saturday morning. They weren’t Main Stream I feel until this song came out. It was a wonderful memory explains why I too play my music super loud Saturday morning when I’m cleaning or in my car. It was the whole 90’s vibe for me that made me fall in love. When this song came out I was telling my friends at school that I know them I live across the street from them! In East Dallas about a few minutes from downtown

I saw these guys in 95. They played 2 songs, then the cops tried to shut them down. They asked to play one more songs, and the cops said OK. Tripping Daisy played for an hour nonstop. It was awesome!
