Sacrilege
Tristania Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There'll be no-one left in doubt
When your soul be cast aground
And Jesus will heal our sins
And Jesus will let us in

Stay down on your knees
Stay down on your knees
Millions crusading against mocking heresy
Madmen race to enforce the book that answers all our needs
Tongues tuned with razorblades teach us divine misdeeds (stay down on your knees)
Our clerics will kill to make us stay down on our knees (stay down on your knees)

Another war is over
And the pain is almost gone
Each wound has been healing
We're so eager to move on

Tongues tuned with razorblades still teach divine misdeeds (stay down on your knees)
Our clerics will kill to make us stay down on our knees (stay down on your knees)

Overall Meaning

The song Sacrilege by Tristania is a commentary on religion and the influence it holds over people, often to the point of extreme dogmatism and violence. The opening lines of the song speak of the inevitable judgment of souls after death, and how only Jesus can absolve them of their sins. This is followed by the repeated refrain of "Stay down on your knees," a plea to followers to remain subservient to their religious hierarchy, and not question their authority.

The second stanza speaks to the dangers of blind faith and religious extremism, with the reference to "millions crusading against mocking heresy" and "our clerics will kill to make us stay down on our knees." The use of razor blades to teach divine misdeeds suggests the violent and destructive nature of this kind of zealotry, which can easily turn to persecution and oppression. The last part of the stanza seems to echo the idea that only through enduring immense pain and suffering can one earn salvation, a common theme in many religious traditions.

The final stanza speaks to the aftermath of war, and how people are eager to move past it and heal, yet the danger of religious dogma still persists. The reference to "tongues tuned with razorblades still teach divine misdeeds" suggests that even in times of peace, there are those who will continue to promote extreme and harmful ideas. The message of the song seems to be a warning against blind faith and the dangers of religious fundamentalism.

I really like this song in particular. It combines both old and new tristanias. Both of them are amazing by themselves but when the two styles are fused its amazing! I hope the do an album like this. I got the gist they were somewhat attempting to on rubicon with songs like magical fix and protection, even amnesia sounds like a fusion of the cure and december elegy. But altogether if fell short though it generally is a great album. Oh well anything they do will be good for me :)

I always thought it was Get down, on your knees

@Hippydude777

tbh I kinda thought those were a bit obvious but okay, thanx for the help. Do you know what vibeke/the female choir is singing throughout the song? I think it "heathen, learn your place" but I'm not sure.
