Týr began in January 1998. Heri Joensen met his old bandmate, Kári Streymoy, at a party in Copenhagen, Denmark. Joensen suggested to Streymoy that they should meet up and jam. Streymoy initially declined, but later took him up on his offer.
They were soon joined by another former bandmate, bassplayer Gunnar H. Thomsen, making the duo a trio. They began making music which was heavily inspired by Norse mythology, Faroese traditional music, and heavy metal music in general. According to the band's frontman Heri Joensen, Týr's "musical mission is to break down the walls that are erected between all the kinds of metal that have arisen over the years. Power-, doom-, black-, progressive-, gothic-, viking-, folk-, ethnic- and epic metal. Walls and labels do nothing but fill people with prejudice."[1]
The name of the band comes from Týr, a Norse god. Before Týr, Joensen and Thomsen formed their first band, at the age of seventeen. They called themselves Cruiser. Streymoy also played with them for a short while. They later changed their name to Wolfgang. Although neither band released any albums, Wolfgang lasted until 2000, which was long enough to record an undisclosed amount of songs that, according to Joensen are "pretty much ready to release.[2]"
Týr was a part of the Paganfest tour in Europe and the US in 2008, with Ensiferum headlining. Other bands on the tour included Eluveitie, Turisas in the US, and Moonsorrow and Korpiklaani joined them on the European part of the tour.
Hear the Heathen Call
Týr Lyrics

A mighty man wanders free on this earth
Kinsmen young may fall by the bitter blade
When he heard is when he laid down his life
Borne on his shield, his sword lying on his chest
The Northern Gate they passed through
They marched on to the eastern mound where they laid him down
Hear the heathen call
Time will take us all
And hear the heathen cry
Finally we die
So hear the heathen call
Time will take us all
And only time will tell
Time will bid us all farewell
All knew our greatest times had come to an end
We proudly carved a memorial stone
There to stand alone through the ages long
Lasting onto later times of the world
Many a thing may change during all the days
A mighty man wanders free on this earth
Kinsmen young may fall by the bitter blade
Crying rain and wailing wind in the mountains we all
Hear the heathen call
Time will take us all
And hear the heathen cry
Finally we die
So hear the heathen call
Time will take us all
And only time will tell
Time will bid us all farewell
Crying rain and wailing wind in the mountains we all
Hear the heathen call
Time will take us all
And hear the heathen cry
Finally we die
So hear the heathen call
Time will take us all
And only time will tell
Time will bid us all farewell
Hear the heathen call
Time will take us all
And hear the heathen cry
Finally we die
So hear the heathen call
Time will take us all
And only time will tell
Time will bid us all farewell
The lyrics of Týr's song "Hear the Heathen Call" explore the transience of human life and the inevitability of death. The first verse contains a powerful declaration that even though things may change over time, every human being - no matter how powerful or mighty - is mortal and will one day die. The second verse describes the funeral of this "mighty man", with his sword and shield laid to rest alongside him. The mourners continue to cry out to the heathen gods to hear their call, acknowledging that ultimately, time will claim them all in death.
The chorus repeats the idea that "Time will take us all" and "finally we die", but it is important to note the use of the term "heathen". This word can have negative connotations in some contexts, but in this song it seems to be used as a way of celebrating a pagan or pre-Christian tradition. The mourners cry out to the ancient gods of their people, recognizing that their fate is ultimately in the hands of forces beyond their control.
Overall, this song is a powerful meditation on mortality and the inevitability of death. It encourages listeners to embrace that fact, to live their lives to the fullest, and to honor the traditions and gods of their ancestors.

Tyr is one of the few bands that brings me to tears, the emotion and power on each song, you dont need alcohol or drugs to feel what this song wants to portray, such an amazing band
