Segall began his recording career as a part-time musician in various underground bands in Orange County and the San Francisco Bay Area, before beginning a solo career in 2008. Segall's first solo release was the cassette Horn The Unicorn released on the Wizard Mountain label (later re-released by HBSP-2X on vinyl record). Around the same time, Wizard Mountain also released a split cassette featuring Segall and the band Superstitions entitled Halfnonagon.
In 2012, Segall released three LPs: His solo album, Twins; a collaboration with White Fence titled Hair and Slaughterhouse, an album with the Ty Segall Band.
My Head Explodes
Ty Segall Lyrics

Making the shine grow, making the grass grow, I am
In time I am a melody, a front for you and all to see
Making the leaves move, powerful and smooth, I am
Making the shy grow, making the grass glow
Making the leaves move, powerful and smooth
My head explodes, my head explodes
My head explodes, my head explodes
Like the water, like the skin exposed my head explodes
The lyrics to Ty Segall's song My Head Explodes are ambiguous and open to interpretation. At first glance, they seem to be a celebration of nature, with the singer taking credit for creating beauty and growth. However, the repetition of the phrase "my head explodes" at the end of each verse hints at a darker, more internal meaning. The image of water and skin suggests vulnerability, and the explosive violence of the imagery suggests a struggle.
One possible interpretation of the song is that it is a meditation on the conflict between creativity and insanity. The lyric "in time I am a melody, a front for you and all to see" could be read as a reference to the performance of art, where the artist must present a polished and controlled version of his or her work, even as the chaos of the creative process rages on inside. The repeated chorus of "my head explodes" could be a metaphor for the overwhelming feelings of anxiety, fear and doubt that often accompany artistic creation. In this reading, the song is a testament to the intense emotional labor that goes into making art, as well as the toll that it can take on the artist.
Another possible interpretation is that the song is a commentary on the volatile, unpredictable nature of the human mind. The lyric "making the shine grow, making the grass grow, I am" could be read as a statement of autonomy, with the singer asserting his control over his own mental landscape. However, the repeated reference to the exploding head suggests that this sense of control is tenuous at best. In this reading, the song is a reflection on the fragility of mental health, as well as the ways in which individual agency can be undermined by hidden forces.
