Thank God For Sinners

You give me the sweets, you know, you know I’m not through, so
Thank God for the sinners, thank God for your love
In the morning I’ll rise above
There’s a hole in my heart, you know then you know it too, too
Won’t you please just stop, you know so I can make it through
Thank God for the sinners, thank God for your love
In the morning I’ll rise above
Thank God for the sinners, thank God for your love
In the morning I’ll rise above
Ty Segall's song "Thank God For Sinners" appears to be both a love song and a plea for redemption. The singer is out on the streets looking for someone who seems to be giving him what he wants, but he recognizes that this is not necessarily good for him. He thanks God for "the sinners" and "your love," suggesting that it is through both pleasure and pain that he comes to appreciate the value of real love. The repetition of the refrain "in the morning I'll rise above" seems to indicate a hope for a better future, one in which the singer can find love without the negative consequences of his past experiences.
The line "there's a hole in my heart, you know then you know it too, too" is particularly interesting, as it suggests a shared experience of pain between the singer and the person he is looking for. He is asking them to "please just stop" whatever behavior is causing him pain, so that he can "make it through." The song does not make clear whether the singer finds what he is looking for, or whether he is ultimately able to rise above the sins and pain that he thanks God for earlier in the song. However, the ambiguity of the lyrics adds to the sense of urgency and longing that the song conveys.
