Pay a scheme
Fear a queen
You're a time
You don't need a reason
It's all in the magazine
On the page
My little queen
Your so clean
You don't need a reason
It's all in the magazine
In Ty Segall's song "The Magazine," the lyrics seem to touch upon themes of conformity and societal pressure. The opening lines "never dream, pay a scheme, fear a queen, you're a time" suggest the idea of sacrificing one's dreams and individuality in order to fit into societal expectations. The phrase "pay a scheme" implies the idea of conforming to society's norms and expectations, while "fear a queen" could metaphorically represent the pressure to please others and seek their approval. The line "you're a time" further emphasizes the notion of being limited or defined by the expectations of society.
The chorus, "you don't need a reason, it's all in the magazine," suggests that these societal pressures are reinforced and perpetuated through media, particularly magazines. Magazines often set standards for beauty, success, and lifestyle, creating an artificial reality that people feel compelled to conform to. The lyrics imply that people may feel they need to adhere to these standards without questioning or seeking a reason, simply because it's presented to them in magazines.
Overall, "The Magazine" conveys the idea of the influence and power that media can have in shaping individuals' perceptions of themselves and their place in society. It highlights the pressure to conform and the notion that following societal expectations is seen as more important than pursuing one's own dreams and desires.
