I Bought My Eyes
Ty Segall Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was a rich man, I was a poor man,
but now I'll never know
They're ringing surgeons,
my eyes have been worthless
And now I'll never see you!
Uh, uh, uh
I'm bringing riches, my eyes are worthless
I still look back and see you...
She was my. she was my other

But now I'll never know, I'm in the dark!
Uh, uh, uh, uh!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ty Segall Band's song "I Bought My Eyes" are quite ambiguous, but it seems to be about a man who has lost his sight due to some kind of medical condition or injury. He laments that he was once wealthy and poor, but now he can't see anything and so he will never know what it's like to be either of those things again. He mentions that surgeons have been brought in, but it's too late to save his eyes. He seems to be regretful that he will never see the person he loves again, and that he is stuck in darkness with no hope of ever seeing the light again.

The repetitive "Uh, uh, uh" in the chorus could be seen as the man's frustration or sadness at his situation, and his inability to express it any other way. The lines "I'm bringing riches, my eyes are worthless" is a possible expression of the man's despair, as he now has money but can't see the things he wants to buy with it. In the second verse, it is suggested that the man had someone in his life who he loved deeply, but now can't see her anymore. The line "She was my other" implies that she was his partner or significant other, but now he is alone and can't even see her face.

Overall, the song seems to be a meditation on the fragility of life and the things we take for granted until they're taken away. The loss of sight is a particularly devastating thing, as it cuts the victim off from the visual world that we rely on so heavily to navigate and understand our surroundings.
