Martyr
Unter Null Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've fallen down for you before
I will not do this anymore
There's been enough tears shed for you
If only you could see me now

I've wasted time on you once more
I cannot do this anymore
There's been enough life spent on you
If only you could see me now

I want to make you watch me bleed
As you drain the life from me
I want to make you watch me die
As you have so many times

And I have fought your sorry war
I won't do this anymore
There's been enough blood spilled for you
If only you could see me now

And you are rotten to the core
And you have played me for a whore

There's been enough love lost on you
If only you could see me now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Unter Null's song "Martyr" speak of the end of a toxic relationship characterized by abuse, manipulation and betrayal. The singer has finally come to the realization that they cannot keep sacrificing their own well-being for the sake of the other person. They have borne the brunt of their partner's cruelty for too long and are now ready to break free. The lyrics are charged with anger, resentment and a desperate desire to be heard and seen by the very person who has disregarded, hurt and rejected them. The singer wants revenge and wants their partner to witness their pain, their wounds and their death. This can be interpreted as a cathartic expression of a victim's need to assert their humanity in the face of dehumanization, as well as a warning to others who might be caught in similar destructive dynamics.

The lines "I want to make you watch me bleed/As you drain the life from me/I want to make you watch me die/As you have so many times" are particularly potent in their graphic depiction of violence and victimization. They suggest that the singer has been reduced to a helpless, suffering creature by their partner, who derives pleasure and power from inflicting pain. The references to blood, life and death are metaphors for the emotional and physical harm that the singer has experienced, as well as their desire for escape and revenge. The last lines "And you are rotten to the core/And you have played me for a whore/There's been enough love lost on you/If only you could see me now" are a scathing denunciation of the partner's character and actions, as well as a bitter acknowledgement of the wasted time, energy and affection that the singer has invested in the relationship.
