Uriah Heep Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You can't back out now
The news is all over town
I'll see you at sundown
And they can put one of us
In a hole in the ground
Now it's three in the afternoon
When you're in the saloon
I wonder if he feels the same
For whoever wins there's still
The cowboy to blame
Sundown, give me some strength
I know I can't go it alone
Sundown, give me your strength
Give me a chance to go home
To go home
Three in the afternoon
And I'm frightened to death
When you're in the saloon
I hear the reverend feels the sin
For whoever wins there's still
The cowboy to blame
The lyrics of Uriah Heep's song Sundown illustrate a tense and ominous confrontation between two people, both fully aware of the potential danger of the situation. The singer asserts that they will meet at sundown, and that one of them may end up dead and buried. The descriptive language creates a palpable sense of fear and foreboding, with the singer admitting to being "frightened to death" as they wait for the appointed time to arrive. The mention of the saloon serves to heighten the tension, suggesting that perhaps alcohol and/or gambling are involved, adding another layer of risk and danger. The line "For whoever wins there's still the cowboy to blame" is particularly striking, as it seems to suggest a sense of inevitability that one or both of them will succumb to violence, even if the outcome is technically a "win" for one person.
Overall, the song's lyrics explore themes of violence, inevitability, and the high stakes involved in situations where two individuals are pushed to the brink. The use of intense imagery and descriptive language serves to create a vivid sense of the danger and tension present in the situation.

High and Mighty is an album that many see as having great and poor songs on it. Everyone has different tastes of course. These bonus tracks that did not end up on the original album are excellent.
