Uriah Heep Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To see where it was that
I have come from
I have a feeling that
There must be a time
When I'll get a chance to go home
'Cause I'm so tired
But I'm just a traveler in time
Trying so hard to pay for my crime
If I could go back
The same way I got here
And see the people that
I once held so near
I'd do my best to
Find an answer for you
But first I must wait till I'm set free
And I don't know
How long that's gonna be
'Cause I'm a man with
A whole lot on his mind
Just out there somewhere
Traveling in time
Traveling in time
I've tried for so long to find
Some way of helping mankind
The lyrics of Uriah Heep's song Traveller convey the story of someone who feels homesick and longs to go back to the place they originated from. The singer looks at the sun every day to try and remember where they came from, and they hope that one day they will have the chance to return home. They express their weariness of being alone and declare themselves a traveler in time trying to pay for their crime. The singer admits that they have a lot on their mind but, at the same time, appeal to serve mankind and find ways to help them.
The lyrics evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing, with the singer feeling isolated and out of place. They express a desire to fix answers for those who matter to them, but first, they must serve out their sentence. It's a struggle for the singer to come to terms with their position, but they remain proactive in their commitment to change the world. The song's themes of homesickness, nostalgia, and redemption make it one of the most reflective and poetic songs ever to come out of the '70s.
