me había azotado.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Victor Jara's song "La Cafetera" revolve around the tale of a mischievous young boy who plays with the housemaids in his mother's absence. He describes his experience of being sent to the kitchen to "souffle the coffee pot" by his mother. However, instead of doing the task, he ends up playing with the cook and kitchen maid. The boy's eyes wander over the woman's body, and he fancies her. He is fascinated with her skirt's torn hem and gets excited seeing the center of her clothes ruffle. The suggestive imagery of the torn skirt hem hints at the boy's burgeoning sexuality, and his excitement reveals his adolescent curiosity about sex.

In the second stanza, the boy continues his tale, recounting how he played with the servants while his mother was away. He describes how he, along with the kitchen maid, got into a tub of water, while he was being followed by other people. The words "La cocinera sí, en la cocina," repeats a few times and suggests that this mischievous play was taking place in the kitchen. Finally, he expresses his relief at having escaped punishment, thanks to the roof, which protected him from his mother's wrath.
