Intergalactic Radio Station
Vangelis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've seen things...
So many things that you can't believe,
Past designs, future designs,
Cables in the bend.

Second-hand sounds,
Future sounds,
Synthesised dialogues,
Incomprehenseble software.

Hi Jon, let's break some rules!
Here comes the sun.

We're doing some recordings later
Same ol' factory you know
Here's some names for you,
Polyester Landscape,
Nylon Oxygen,
Ashes to Concrete.

Oh, by the way,
It's been a beautiful morning,
What a morning,

Great morning,
It's a great morning man.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Vangelis's song Intergalactic Radio Station speak of an otherworldly experience. The opening line, "I've seen things," could be interpreted as the singer experiencing things outside of the average human experience. The following line, "So many things that you can't believe," supports this interpretation, suggesting that the things the singer has seen are beyond comprehension.

The next lines, "Past designs, future designs, cables in the bend," point to a technological theme. The singer is witnessing technology from both the past and future, and cables in the bend indicate a complex web of connections, perhaps referencing the interconnectedness of technology and humanity.

The lyrics continue with phrases like "second-hand sounds," "future sounds," and "synthesized dialogues," which allude to the power of technology to create new sounds and realities. The line "incomprehensible software" reinforces the idea of something beyond human understanding.

The final lines, "Hi Jon, let's break some rules! Here comes the sun," suggest an excitement in experimentation and boundary-pushing. This continues with mentions of "recordings" and bizarre, intriguing names for unknown things, like "Polyester Landscape" and "Nylon Oxygen." The final lines, "Oh, by the way, it's been a beautiful morning, what a morning, great morning, it's a great morning, man," bring the listener back to earth and the present, leaving them with a sense of optimism.

6 years ago my girlfriend and I travelled through Europe in a camper. One morning around 5AM we arrived in Portugal at a beach, it was that magical time when the sun slowly starts to rise and the world is still asleep. We got our folding chairs out, sat in front of our camper and turned on the radio. This song was on we sat there in silence, holding hands, just enjoying that perfect moment in time.

You have me envying Europeans with regard to radio. Not that we can't find these things on YouTube nowadays, but FM radio can be pretty dreadful here (Georgia, US)

I first heard this back in about 1990, on a "space music" mixtape a friend had made from the radio. The tape got lost, and neither of us knew what the song was, but it stuck to me and the parts I could remember became kind of an unofficial anthem in my head, usually when trying to relax. And then about two years ago I woke up in the middle of the night with the lyrics in my mind as clear as day. I can't describe how it felt to finally find it, and hear it again. This song was a journey for me.
