Sittin on the dock of the bay

Sittin′ in the morning sun
I'll be sittin′ till the evenin' come
Watchin' the ships roll in
Then I watch ′em roll away again

Yeah, I′m sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watchin′ the tide roll away
Sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin′ time

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the Frisco Bay
I have nothin' to live for
Look like nothin′ gonna come my way

So I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watchin′ the tide roll away
Sittin′ on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

Looks like nothin′ gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I′ll remain the same

Sittin' here restin′ my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
Two thousand miles I roam
Just to make this dock my home

Now I'm sittin′ on the dock of the bay
Watchin′ the tide roll away

Sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin′ time

Overall Meaning

"Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" is a melancholic yet reflective tune written by Otis Redding and Steve Cropper. It was released in 1968, after Otis Redding's death, and quickly became a classic. The song talks about an individual who is lethargic and disillusioned with life, sitting alone and watching the tide goes by, hoping for something to change. The song evokes feelings of loneliness and isolation, and its poetic lyrics create a vivid mood of hopelessness.

If a singer like Bill Withers sang this song, he would give an even more soulful perspective to it as he has a gentle voice that will travel slowly and make this song even more moving. He would sing in a calm and soothing manner that would provide comfort to the listener's heart. The song talks about feeling lost and abandoned, but Withers would bring some hope even in the darkness.

If Bob Dylan sang this song, he would take a more introspective approach, giving the song a more political meaning. Dylan is known for his political songs and how he criticizes the government. Therefore, he would frame "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" as a reflection of society's wrong turn. He would be more acerbic, touch on the decay of inner cities, and become more daring in his interpretation.

Ultimately, the song would become more poignant with Dylan's haunting voice. John Lennon would also provide an interesting touch to the track by adding some psychedelic elements and philosophy, providing a sense of freedom to the song. Lennon would put some thought-provoking lyrics that would add more depth to the song, leaving the listeners in deep pondering.

In 1970/1971, I was assigned as a dispatcher working the docks of Cam Ranh Bay, Republic of Vietnam. As such, this song has special memories for me.
