It's awesome to see artists of varying genres cover so many great songs that Brian Wilson made; however - I feel like at the lengths they went to change the source material - it fundementally changes the feel and purpose of the original song.

I hold these songs and their initial material very close to my heart and give every ounce of respect I have to it - which may be why I'm listening to this with an expectation that wasn't initially considered when producing this album.

However, I believe that a cover should; enhance the emotion/feel, improve upon the original, or convey the same message (in tone) AND emotion in a completely different sound-signature. Now what is considered "enhanced" or "improved" is completely subjective but I believe that a more common and universal way of looking at those is to simply consider whether or not the intended feeling/character of the original is maintained and brings a new perspective to how you listen to the song.

Now a factor that made Brian Wilson so great at what he did was the ability to perfectly capture an emotion, feel, or idea and portray it in a musical form. Elemental songs like Cool Cool Water, Roll Plymouth Rock (or "Do You Like Worms?" if you prefer), and Wind Chimes are fantastic examples of this. This is a very important and key factor that a lot of these covers fail to account for.

What it seems to me is that many of these covers are just completely new songs (with very very distant resemblance to the originals) using the lyrics as their scapegoat as to why they should be considered a "cover". Some of them even bare no resemblance to the originals.

Although, there are four covers that really stood out to me.

The three covers that I genuinely would listen to on their own and consider great versions to their original counterpart are:
- I Just Wasn't Made For These Times by Feelds
- Let's Go Away For Awhile by John McEntire
- Caroline No by DM3

These were genuinely the only covers on the entire album which conveyed the same emotion and feel of the originals while being presented in their own sound-signature and fashion that made me really enjoy and appreciate the work that was done.

Finally, the cover for "I'm Waiting For The Day" is very creative and is definitely a change in emotion and message but the change in backing resembles Beach Boy history while staying in some resemblance to the original song. I wouldn't consider it a cover I would listen to more than once - but I can definitely appreciate the creativity that went into it the first time listening to it.

In no way do I mean for this to be interpreted as "fact" or rude; I simply just want to post this as an opionated "educational" comment for those who come around to see it. Some of these covers may fit the listening tastes of others better than my own and by no means do I want to disregard those tastes. I am simply presenting from my perspective on how I view this album.

In my opinion - the other covers do not show a high regard of respect towards Brian; but - the last three on the Album in terms of quality and creativity - show an amount of respect and craftsmanship that makes up for more than what was originally lost.

This is astonishing! A lot of my favourite Brian Wilson stuff is when he's mid-breakdown in the 70s and 80s and makes a lot of incredibly rash creative decisions and nobody says no to any of it - and this album somehow captures that mood. It takes the classics, and shapes them to sit alongside 'Baseball's On' and 'Too Much Sugar' and, uh, 'Revolution 9'. I'd be surprised if this was the Brian covers album anyone quite wanted or expected, but I love it. It's messy enough to raise all my eyebrows, but focussed enough that it was somehow all *deliberate*!

The first track alone already demonstrated that these covers would be wonderful, and they really were.
