The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

"Suzanne" and I go back to 1967. A good friend of mine in college happened to look just like Judy Collins and could sing much the same. "Margaret" would sit on the dorm room floor, legs crossed, long black hair cascading, guitar in hand and regaling us with sweet folk songs, "Suzanne" among them (her personal favorite). I had not "met" Neil Diamond yet.
I suspect after I loved the song so much from Judy Collins and Margaret that I possibly heard Neil's rendition (recorded in 1971) on the radio. Neil's hauntingly seductive version mesmerized this 22 year old (in 1971). Pretty sure the album "Stones" was my first purchased.
There's so much back story to "Suzanne " and in Doug's commentary, under 'show more', the explanations by Cohen and CBC Canada essay are quite sufficient in my opinion. I just love the song!
The rhythm and cadence are hypnotic and draw me closer...as does the guitar and percussion and finally Neil's ever smooth and melodic voice.
Doug, in his genius way, remade this video of 8 years ago using images from the older and added new, updated images to make it stunningly beautiful. Doug is a Video Artist 😊...well done! 🫖🍊🍊

@NEIL DIAMOND CENTRAL thank you for taking the time to reply. I was a Neil Diamond fan from the first time I heard him as a kid in the Seventies , Leonard Cohen was a bit later in the early Eighties.
Even then it took me years to go deeper into my appreciation of his talent, my circle of friends had to be educated by me, we weren't cool enough to "get" him.
I used Jeff Buckley's amazing rendition of Hallelujah as an "introduction".
Neil is on another level and so humble, considering he is one of the all time greats of modern music, up there with Burt Baccarat, Hal David, Paul Anka and Neil Sedaka all underrated or not known by the younger generations.
(I laugh that I said that, because I will be 57 this month and can't escape the truth that I to am getting on a bit).
I will share this quick little story with you and leave you be.
In 1985 on an August Bank Holiday, a friend and I went to a coastal town in England, called Clacton on Sea and found ourselves in a Pub, where the entertainment was a tribute act, two guys with a sound system and a guitar.
They basically did 90 minute set, I had a few beers as did most people and up until my life thus far, the atmosphere was bloody amazing and the whole Pub was in the hands of Neil Diamond's imitators.
That is one day I can never forget. It was a perfect day for me, My chum was driving so couldn't drink too much but he was just as enthralled as the other patrons.
Every time I hear any Neil Diamond, my brain defaults me to that day.

"Back story of Constant Comment Tea”
Constant Comment tea, (Bigelow Tea Co.), served by Suzanne Vaillancourt to Leonard Cohen in the early 60's, was created in 1945 by Ruth Campbell, the grandmother of Cindi Bigelow who is the current CEO of the company.
Ruth Campbell pioneered the concept of the specialty tea. In 1945 tea in America was either Black tea or Green tea. Ruth wanted something more. She came upon an old Colonial recipe for tea made in stone containers with sweet spices and orange peel.
Ruth went to her kitchen and worked with Black tea and sweet spices and orange peel until she made a tea that satisfied her.
Serving it to her friends she was overjoyed at the many positive compliments. She named the tea "Constant Comment" tea.
It took some years for Constant Comment tea to rise in general popularity and sales, but it did reach a huge success and thereby the Bigelow Tea Company was founded on this one special tea and it is still their focus and top selling tea.
Ruth Campbell died in 1966, the same year Judy Collins recorded "Suzanne" with the famous line: "She feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China". Sadly, Ruth didn't hear the beautiful iconic song Leonard Cohen wrote with her Constant Comment tea in the lyrics.
About that famous line from the song... Cindi Bigelow tells that the tea and oranges do NOT come from China. It has been said that Leonard Cohen added that for the mystique and romanticism. The tea actually comes from a mountain top in Sri Lanka - always has and always will. The origin of the oranges is top secret as is the tea recipe.
Cindi Bigelow also squashed the rumour that cinnamon is an ingredient. It is not. - Paraphrased from NPR (National Public Radio USA) journalist Nina Martyris (November 2016)

"Suzanne" and I go back to 1967. A good friend of mine in college happened to look just like Judy Collins and could sing much the same. "Margaret" would sit on the dorm room floor, legs crossed, long black hair cascading, guitar in hand and regaling us with sweet folk songs, "Suzanne" among them (her personal favorite). I had not "met" Neil Diamond yet.
I suspect after I loved the song so much from Judy Collins and Margaret that I possibly heard Neil's rendition (recorded in 1971) on the radio. Neil's hauntingly seductive version mesmerized this 22 year old (in 1971). Pretty sure the album "Stones" was my first purchased.
There's so much back story to "Suzanne " and in Doug's commentary, under 'show more', the explanations by Cohen and CBC Canada essay are quite sufficient in my opinion. I just love the song!
The rhythm and cadence are hypnotic and draw me closer...as does the guitar and percussion and finally Neil's ever smooth and melodic voice.
Doug, in his genius way, remade this video of 8 years ago using images from the older and added new, updated images to make it stunningly beautiful. Doug is a Video Artist 😊...well done! 🫖🍊🍊

Thank you Louise, a viewer recently placed some comments, positive ones, on the previous version. When I accessed it, and viewed it I felt terribly disappointed. Firstly, it was in the old 4:3 aspect (square) as opposed to the current 16:9 aspect (widescreen). I had to update it, even though it meant wiping out the 1.4 million views. 😞

Thanks Louise. You are blessed with the gift of being able to read music and play a piano/organ. Sadly, I ducked when these were being handed out. However, thankfully, this shortcoming has not impacted on my love of music. Lacking in technical appreciation, I simply love good/great music for its own sake.
There is an Australian singer I'd like you to listen to. He is terribly underrated and obviously did not possess the skills, ability or drive of Neil Diamond. His name, Kevin Johnson.
