Paradise
Vayden Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What is the point we can't turn back?
What have we left to lose?
You're so quick to tie the traits that I lack
While you're winding up my noose

Forget what you feel,
But not what you felt,
Wasn't I good to you?
I swallowed my pride,
And tightened my belt,
So we could make it through,

(Chorus)
Don't ever tell me I should close my eyes,
I've been here once or twice before,
I am a product of paradise,
Avid perfection attracts storms.

There's a fault in your eye,
Your about to break down,
Go on reduce my will to clay,
Fingers aren't made to wrap people around,
You do it every day.

So go on wrap it tight it's good while it lasts,
It's gonna hurt you too.
You cut off the blood when you run from your past,
It's go'n catch up to you,
Cause I'm still tied on to you.

(Chorus out)

Overall Meaning

The song opens with questions that are left unanswered. What is the point of no return, after which one cannot go back? What have they lost, and what is at stake now? The singer seems to be addressing someone who is pointing out their faults and weaknesses while simultaneously causing them harm. The phrase "winding up my noose" refers to this person's actions, which are leading the singer into a situation where they feel constricted and suffocated. This is a metaphorical noose, which the singer is powerless to avoid.

The second verse tries to rationalize the situation. The singer urges his companion to forget what he feels but remember what he felt in the past. He has gone out of his way to make things work, swallowing his pride and tightening his belt. However, it seems like all his efforts are in vain as their relationship is still on thin ice. The chorus comes in and it is quite significant. The singer tells his companion not to ask him to close his eyes and forget what's happening. He has been in such a scenario before and knows what it entails. He acknowledges that he is a product of paradise, meaning he has been blessed with good things in life, but his "avid perfection" attracts storms, indicating that his happiness is always short-lived.

In the last verse, the singer seems to have given up trying to fix their situation. He points out the flaws in the other person, saying they are about to break down. He accuses them of reducing his will to clay, which is a reference to something that is easily shaped or molded. He insists that it's not natural to wrap somebody around one's finger, yet this is what his companion does every day. He recognizes that it's good while it lasts, but it's going to hurt both of them, and sooner or later, they will have to face their past.
