Thank You For The Music
Vera Lynn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm nothing special, in fact I'm a bit of a bore
If I tell a joke, you've probably heard it before
But I have a talent, a wonderful thing
Cause everyone listens when I start to sing
I'm so grateful and proud
All I want is to sing it out loud

So I say
Thank you for the music, the songs I'm singing
Thanks for all the joy they're bringing
Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty
What would life be?
Without a song or a dance what are we?
So I say thank you for the music
For giving it to me

Mother says I was a dancer before I could walk
She says I began to sing long before I could talk
But I've often wondered, how did it all start?
Who found out that nothing can capture a heart
Like a melody can?
Well, whoever it was, I'm a fan

So I say
Thank you for the music, the songs I'm singing
Thanks for all the joy they're bringing
Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty
What would life be?
Without a song or a dance what are we?
So I say thank you for the music
For giving it to me

I've been so lucky, I am the girl with golden hair
I wanna sing it out to everybody
What a joy, what a life, what a chance!

So I say
Thank you for the music, the songs I'm singing
Thanks for all the joy they're bringing
Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty
What would life be?
Without a song or a dance what are we?

So I say thank you for the music
For giving it to me

Overall Meaning

In the song "Thank You For The Music," the singer confesses, "I'm nothing special, in fact I'm a bit of a bore." However, they go on to identify their talent: singing. They express gratitude for the music that enriches their life and the lives of others. The singer ponders the origins of music and how it has the power to capture the heart like nothing else can. They recount how their mother recognized their preternatural inclination toward singing and dancing from a young age.

The lyrics highlight the importance of music in our lives. While the singer recognizes their limitation in other areas, they cherish the gift of song. They suggest that life would be considerably less meaningful without it. Further, the lyrics show gratitude for the joy that music brings and the experiences it facilitates. The song's message is simple but powerful: thank you for the music.

I usually hate any cover version of ABBA’s songs, but give this one to the Force’s Sweetheart Dame Vera and she does a fantastic job of it - just as she did everything she sang. Thanks for sharing this rare gem ❤

@G6JPG

I'm sure Bjorn and Benny (and Agnetha) would have approved, with DVL's perfect diction and tone!
(I'd never noticed, until I heard her sing darnce, that Agnetha sings it with a short a, dance. Probably because that's how I'd say it anyway.)
