I Say Nothing
Voice of the Beehive Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I heard this girl one day.
She had these long, tight legs.
She said, "I get it every night,
and he calls me every day.

He'll leave you black and blue.
He'll rip you right in two,
then wake up in the morning,
and say "Who the hell are you?"

And then she turns to me and says "We know you.
Tell us some secrets, honey. We won't say a word."

But I say nothing, I talk to no-one.
I know what I believe. Don't need to wear it on my sleeve.
I talk to no-one, I will say nothing.
If we come and go alone, why do they need to know?

The boy who's always mad.
He's just alone and sad.
He holds my hand so tightly.
He says "Go away, I'm bad.

I'll leave you black and blue
I'll rip you right in two.
But it is just because
I do not know how to be true.

That's why I sometimes stand alone at parties.
That's why I drink, so I'll be who they think I am.

But don't say nothing. Don't talk to no-one.
I'm not what they believe, and if they find out they will leave.
Don't talk to no-one, Just don't say nothing.
If we come and go alone, why do they need to know?
(Arcades)

All those endless days of all those sci-fi slaves.
The noise is just a drag until you say close your eyes,
and listen...
They're singing just for you
It's swinging just for you
It's screaming just for you

(instumental break)

I'll say nothing.
I'll talk to no-one.

There is a place somewhere
Some times you'll find me there
And If I am alone
I will be sitting on the stairs.

I'll be as good as new.
One of the lucky few,
who's laughing at the joke, and
as I leave I laugh for you.

But I say nothing, I talk to no-one.
I know what I believe. Don't need to wear it on my sleeve.
I talk to no-one, I will say nothing.
If we come and go alone, then what's the point of carrying these arcades?

I'll say nothing.
I'll talk to no-one.

I will say nothing.
I'll talk to no-one, but you.

Overall Meaning

The song 'I Say Nothing' by Voice Of The Beehive deals with themes of secrecy, loneliness, and the need for privacy. The lyrics portray two characters: a girl who seems to have a secret life behind closed doors with an abusive partner, and a boy who struggles to be true to himself and feels the need to put on a façade in social situations. Both characters appear to be searching for a sense of self and meaning in their lives.

The singer of the song is approached by the girl, who asks for his secrets, promising not to tell a soul. However, the singer chooses to remain silent, stating that he already knows what he believes and doesn't need to express it to anyone. He then describes the boy who is always mad and holds his hand tightly, telling him to go away because he is bad. The boy is struggling with his identity and is filled with self-doubt. The lyrics suggest that both characters are trying to find their way and are searching for something to hold onto.

In the final verse, the singer speaks of a place where he finds solace and is content being alone. He finds humor in the absurdity of life and seems at peace with himself. The song ends with the singer saying that he will only talk to the listener and no one else.

Overall, the song is a poignant and melancholy reflection on the human condition, our need for privacy, and our search for meaning and purpose.

I heard a girl one day - she had these
Long tight legs

Me everyday"
He'll leave you back and blue - he'll rip
You right in two
Then wake up in the morning and say "who
The hell are you?"
And then she turned to me and said "we
Know you, tell us some secrets honey we
Won't say a word"

But i say nothing, i talk to no-one
I know what i believe, don't need to wear
It on my sleeve
I talk to no-one, i will say nothing
If we come and go alone why do they need
To know ?

The boy who's always mad just alone
And sad
He holds my hand so tightly he says
"go away i'm bad
I'll lave you black and blue
I'll rip you right in two
But it is just because i do not know
How to be true
That's why i sometimes stand alone at
Parties
That's why i drink so i'll be who they think i am"

But don't say nothing, don't talk to no-one
I'm not what they believe and if they find
Out they will leave
Don't talk to no-one just don't say nothing
If we come and go alone why to they need
To know

Arcades - all those endless days of all
Those sci-fi slaves
The noise was just a drag until you
Said "close your eyes and listen
'cause it's singing for you
It's swinging just for you
It's screaming just for you

There is a place somewhere
Sometimes you'll find me there
If i am alone i will be sitting on the
Stairs
I'll be good as new, of one of the
Lonely few
Who's laughing at the joke and as i
Leave i laugh for you

And i will say nothing...

A great band with sharp writing and beautiful voices. They should have had a lot more success than they got. I'm still listening to their songs in 2021.

Stewart Cramer

Same. Lots of interesting pinkish, pop-y writing. Found their CD in a bargain bin in the 90s, been listening to them ever since!

@1.55, I could listen to that guitar day and night, and I'm a punk stroke hard Rocker

Barry Hart

Very true-they should have been as big as the Go-Gos.

Martin

This is such a good song. Was an early teen when I heard it first and it's still amazing.

Patrick Smith

Brilliant band. I loved this song and the whole Let it Bee album is great. The guitar work is stunning as well. The two girls were American and the drummer was from Madness. They should have been bigger and are so much better than anything around nowadays.

Nigel Skipping

Yes they needed another two songs at this standard and they would have. Still amazing though!

Barry Hart

Very true.
