When the sisters first sang together they called themselves the Beehive Girls, because of their beehive hairstyles. Their initial success came with the 1988 album Let It Bee, on which they recruited former members from ska band Madness to play guitar and drums. The album was popular on college radio stations, and the success was largely due to their brightly-coloured image and shout-along songs that was an antidote to the doom and gloom college rock scene. Their biggest commercial success came in the early 1990s with the single, Monsters and Angels from the album, Honey Lingers. In 1994 the other members left the band. The sisters decided to continue, recording the album Sex & Misery. The album did not sell well in the UK, and early success in the USA for the single Scary Kisses was poorly capitalised on. In late 1996 their record company refused to extend their contract, and the girls disappeared from the music industry, although they re-formed to play three live dates with The Wonder Stuff in 2003.
Say It
Voice of the Beehive Lyrics

You always walk me home.
You say I make you head go
Nasty when you are alone.
Keep eyes on me at parties,
You push their hands away.
You know they're in it for the
Play it. It feels like all you
Want is me so how come you won't
Say it.
You know I know they watch you. I
See but I don't say. I hear the
Bathroom conversation. I just
Shrug away. 'Cause I've had you
In the ocean and I've have you on
The floor. You must remember the game,
You know just how to play it.
It feels like all you want is me so how
Come you won't say it ?
Silence is golden, Promises go rusty.
Sometimes when you talk too much the
Works get old and dusty. Don't say it
To me, I won't say it to you. As long as
We're not saying it, I know something else
We can do.
So just ignore my weakness for boys in
Noisy bands. They always seem to say too
Much, they always need a hand. Remember
When your lonely in places far away,
You're my favorite game. I might lose
But I'll play it. It feels like all you
Want is me so you don't have to say it.
The lyrics to Voice Of The Beehive’s ‘Say It’ describe a complicated and ambiguous relationship between two people. The singer describes how the other person is affectionate towards them and attentive in public but is not willing to commit to a relationship or express their true feelings. The singer is aware of the other person’s actions and knows that they are playing games with them, but they are still drawn to them and are willing to play along. The chorus of the song repeats the phrase, “It feels like all you want is me, so how come you won’t say it?” expressing the singer’s confusion and frustration with the situation.
The lyrics also present a contrast between silence and communication. The singer acknowledges that sometimes saying too much can cause problems and that silence can be a valuable thing, as long as both parties understand what is going on. However, the lack of communication between the two people results in a lack of clarity about their relationship and the singer is left uncertain about the other person’s true intentions.
Overall, the lyrics of ‘Say It’ explore the ambiguity and complexity of romantic relationships and the difficulty of navigating feelings and communication.
