Rise
Voivod/Voïvod Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Anark
Neuro-perfect
Lies sleeping in death
Nether darkness underground
Scared silence
Not a sound
Demok
Meta-control
Out goes the signal
Radiation from the sky
Activation
Second life
Now see the new light rise
Anark returns to earth
Out into the world
Restoration over all
Nether darkness as before
Now see the new light rise
Now see the new night rise

Must overcloud
Dark like before

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Voivod/Voïvod's song "Rise" describes a post-apocalyptic world where the human race is extinct, and a new form of life emerges from the ashes of destruction. The first few lines mention "Anark," a character who is neuro-perfect and lies sleeping in death. Anark is symbolic of the old world order and the past. The following lines describe the darkness that has descended on the earth, and the silence that pervades it. "Demok" or democracy, is mentioned as meta-control, which has failed to prevent the destruction of the human race.

The next few lines describe the arrival of a new form of life, which is activated by a signal sent from the sky. This new life rises from the ashes of the old, and the darkness that once shrouded the world begins to dissipate. The old world order is replaced with a new one, and the new life form takes over the world. The last few lines suggest that the darkness may return, but for now, the new light has risen, and there is hope for the future. The song speaks to the idea of renewal and hope for a new beginning after the destruction of the old.

Both Negatron and Phobos have their prog moments, the problem is that most prog snobs are way too prejudiced against this "raw" sound the albums have to notice that.

Gianmarco

So underrated, in my opinion Phobos is one of the best albums of the 90's

I bought Negatron when it first came out...but at the time, I was just upset that Snake was gone. I was underwhelmed by Negatron and never even listened to Phobos. But hearing they were coming back with a new album got me reminiscing over the stuff I knew, and rediscovering stuff I hadn't heard. I'm hearing Phobos for the first time right now and REALLY digging it. Maybe I need to go back and give Negatron a second chance.

It takes quite a bit to scare me and this era of Voivod does just that. They are THE best metal band ever. Absolutely menacing.
