Their music is firmly rooted in basement rock, and branches towards sculpted towers of spaced-out sonics that wrap themselves around indelible melodies. My Number One
Whales Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And please don't see me as a coward
For death, I do not forsake thee
Though your dark stare is always upon me
Well, I fell in love with a world in you
Well, I fell in love with a world in you
'Cause my poor life makes you none the richer
Oh, your cold hands are clutching at cloth
I leave nothing on Earth that won't rot
Well, I fell in love with the world in you
Well, I fell in love with the world in you
Well, I fell in love with the world in you
And now I feel cold
Well, I fell in love with the world in you
And now I feel holier
These lyrics from Whale's song "My Number One" seem to be about a person facing death while feeling a complicated mix of emotions. The first stanza speaks directly to death, asking it to not judge the person for fearing it, and acknowledging that death's presence never wavers. The second stanza seems to be addressing death again, this time insisting that death not take pleasure in ending the person's life because they have nothing of value left behind. In the chorus, the singer admits that they fell in love with someone or something represented by the world in the person they address. The repetition of this phrase emphasizes the intensity of this feeling. The final two lines of the song speak to the transformation the singer undergoes as they face their imminent death. They finish the song feeling both cold and "holier."
The lyrics convey both fear and a sense of acceptance. The person seems to understand that death is unavoidable; however, they still want to be remembered for something, for having left a meaningful mark before their demise. The imagery of coldness is also used throughout the song, which adds a haunting quality to the singer's words. Overall, the lyrics are thought-provoking and somewhat melancholy, provoking deep emotions in the listener.

Well, I fell in love with a world in you

My death doesn't benefit you
Oh, your cold hands are clutching at cloth
I feel you taking me away from this world
I leave nothing on Earth that won't rot

I feel closer to something greater than myself
