In 1988, Downing finally made his solo debut, releasing the self-titled Will Downing. The album featured a new version of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." The track did not fair well on the R&B charts but it managed to reach #4 on the Dance charts. In the United Kingdom, "A Love Supreme" managed to reach #14 on the singles charts.
Downing has released many albums throughout his career, always on the brink of stardom but never quite making it. In 1989 he released Come Together As One and in '91, Dream Fulfilled. The latter featured the single "I Try" which reached #13 on the R&B charts, Downing's best performance to date.
1993 saw Downing's fourth album release with Love's the Place to Be. In 1995, he released Moods and in 1997, Invitation Only. Continuing his steady stream of releases, 1998 saw Pleasures of the Night, 2000 offered All the Man You Need and in 2002, Sensual Journey.
With so many albums under his belt, Downing never slows down, releasing Emotions in 2003, Christmas, Love and You in 2004 and Soul Symphony in 2005.
While Will Downing has never been a massive celebrity in the United States, he has seen reasonable success in the United Kingdom.

Lika a sign that greets the close of day
Feel the waters welcoming arms
Embrace me in their quiet karma
I can't hear what you say anymore
Just the sound of trees on the ocean floor
Irresistibly drawn from the shore
I'm floating out to sea
Helpless on the restless tide
That flows between you and me
Moving slowly as if in a dream
The colors change from blue to green
All aroung me reflections of you
In forests deep I'm passing through
In the swell of the storm we're as one
We're dancing in the morning sun
Could it be that we've only just begun
I'm drowning in your eyes
I'm floating out to sea
Helpless on the restless tide
That flows between you and me
I'm drowning in your eyes
I'm floating out to sea
Helpless on the restless tide
That flows between you and me
Lying here beside you
I try to reach you but you're so far
I'm drowning in your eyes
I'm floating out to sea
Helpless on the restless tide
That flows between you and me
I'm drowning in your eyes
I'm floating out to sea
Helpless on the restless tide
That flows between you and me
I'm drowning in your eyes
I'm drowning in your eyes
I'm drowning in your eyes
I'm drowning in your eyes
"Drowning in Your Eyes" is a love song by Will Downing that describes the feeling of being completely consumed by a person's love to the point of losing oneself. The lyrics use ocean and water imagery to convey the extent of the love the singer feels. The song starts with the singer feeling like the ground is slipping away, setting the mood for the dreamy, surreal feeling that pervades the rest of the song. He then describes feeling drawn to the ocean, unable to resist the pull that he feels. In the chorus, he says that he is "drowning" in the person's eyes but at the same time "floating out to sea," showing how his love is both overwhelming and freeing. The second verse describes a shared experience between the singer and the person he is singing to, with them being united and inseparable in the midst of a storm. The song concludes with the singer acknowledging that he feels helpless despite being so close to the person he loves, emphasizing again the all-consuming nature of his feelings.
Overall, the song uses evocative language and vivid imagery to create a sense of being lost in love. The ocean and water are powerful symbols of depth and emotional intensity that are frequently used in love songs, and Downing uses them skillfully here. The idea of being "drowned" in someone's eyes is both romantic and a little frightening, conveying the sense of being completely at another person's mercy.
