They were either from Texas or the Carolinas. William Smith was a kind of “guitar evangelist” with a percussive guitar style and a growling voice, much like Blind Willie Johnson and other singers from this period. Judging by the songs they recorded, they mixed topical songs with religious overtones with purely religious repertoire, but they could have been singing many other styles of music, like black street singers often do. The counterpoint voice of his wife who plays also with a sort of washboard all kind of percussive effects over William’s singing and repetitive guitar riffs give the Smiths a unique and raw sound unheard since then on records.

I know I'm going to sound nuts here, I've never actually shared this story outside of a few close friends. But, I think a decade or so ago now there were a few weeks where I had a vaguely similar experience. Much less scary though.

Anyways, It started at first as me and a friend hearing a strange howl. Now, we had both grown up in a fairly heavily forested area. Coyotes are super common, domesticated dogs, bobcats, and even the very occasional mountain lion/black bear. I had heard and was familiar with all of those creature sounds.

This one was different though. It invoked a particularly spine tingling sensation that instantly made the hair on the back of our necks stand up. Enough to make us go from the covered back porch with a fenced in yard to back inside the house.

Then we heard that same howl coming from different directions over the next few weeks a handful of times.

Until one peculiar evening, (not terribly long after hearing another howl) I was driving back home in the ole chevy. It must have been 1 or 2 in the morning. As I came down around the bend and my headlights shone upon the hill to the right next to a small pond, I saw the creature.

This time it was from a distance. But It looked like a large silver wolf. The moon casting a sheen upon its fur. Sitting in a hunched over position watching me intently. Far too large to be a domestic dog. (many people around the area have large domesticated dogs. St bernards, great pyrenees, english bull mastiffs, exc.) For a moment I paused and looked at it. And then proceeded to drive away rather rapidly.

Then one night me and my girlfriend (now the mrs.) were heading home from that same friends house. And upon turning into my mothers neighborhood. We saw either that creature or at least a very similar one.. walking right in the middle of the road on all fours in a residential neighborhood approximately 3.5 miles from where I last saw one. This time I got a much better look at it. We stopped and looked for probably 30 seconds or so. It just kind of lifted its head and looked over at us for a moment and then a few moments later stood up on its hind legs to face us. Didn't start to charge or do anything in an aggressive fashion.

Looking into its eyes It felt.. intelligent. old. Ancient even. Vibe wise. Like it was not particularly mad at us but it was not particularly happy either.

The best way I can describe it is a much better fed and more attractive looking professor lupin in werewolf form. Still had the silver hair glinting in the moonlight. The golden sheen in its eyes from the headlights certainly didn't help it be less creepy. The front paws looked a lot more like hands than paws.

I should have tried to take a picture, Not that the cellular phone camera sensor I had at the time would have done much justice in low light. But I felt like lingering too long or doing something of that nature would upset it. After the initial shock of seeing it wore off, the survival instinct kicked in, The creature was large enough I did not even feel safe in a steel bodied 02 Tundra.

Anyways, we proceeded rapidly down the street to my mothers driveway (luckily our turn was in front of where it was). Ran inside. locked all the doors and windows. and made sure the ole .44 mag was handy.

I have never heard or seen it since.

Was it some crazy creature rousted from the forest due to new construction? Was it perhaps a skin walker? (they had recently developed a beautiful section of wilderness right near my mothers house that had strange intricately stacked soil and stone mounds in the woods there). Or was one of the neighbors actually a werewolf? I have no idea. Can't say for sure what it was, and most would probably dismiss it as crazy talk. One thing is certain though, that image will be forever burned into my mind.

No I think it was cause remember when the daughter and her boyfriend took the dogs for a walk and found the den and heard growling sounds well that was day time and they were safe.. I think they never had an issue with the creatures before cause they didnt know about the dogs.. but finding the den and the creatures knew the dogs existed and wanted to eat them not the people.. so that's when they came for them at night and left in the morning before the sun completely rose. Cause werewolves cant be out during the day only night time. With them being canine they more than likely perceived that they wouldn't be able to despite their own strength. I have a yorkie and he sometimes second guesses himself when it comes to even jumping on the bed even though his done it hundreds of times before. What causes him to second guess himself is if something on the bed has changed since the last time he jumped up there and when I reassure him he does it no problem. Dogs are smart but they also tend to over analyze things which can lead to doubt in their abilities and I imagine that's what was going on with these creatures. Just my two cents.

Spectacular storytelling, as always! Also, that recounting was eerily & fearfully reminiscent of that 2002 British movie Dog Soldiers (featuring these ultra badass & elite British super troopers who held off 3-4 huge, attacking werewolves from a very isolated farmhouse nestled way up in the Scottish Highlands!).
It wouldn't surprise me too much if a detachment of Delta Force & Seal Team Six commandos were sent in to investigate/wipe out those werewolf like creatures (the FBI was probably notified who in turn notified the military!). Very freaky story indeed!

I've lived in Maine for all of my adult life and about half my childhood. I'm more of a city boy from the southern part of the state, but I can say that wolves are extremely rare in Maine - but Coywolves are native to Maine. They're not common, but I imagine the pairing of a coyote and a wolf could grow to be a pretty terrifying pack out in a place as rural as Palmyra. Hope that helps! :)

I keep coming back to this one. It's my favorite Mr Ballen story. The dogman stories are big in the Yoop, and it's a good reminder of why you keep your guns in the house. Not that I think they would have done much good against these things. On an episode of 'Haunted Woods,' a couple claimed to have encountered two of them while camping along the Outer Banks of NC. The man claims he shot one with his .357, and it was ineffective. Then again, maybe a rifle would have done the trick. Personally, I wouldn't want to encounter even one of them outside of anything less than an Abram's Tank.

Just found your channel this morning. This story put me right back into panic mode and exactly how I felt the night of my first face to face encounter. I'd had the creature around my home for quite a while and heard him when he'd come near my window sniffing and scaring my dogs. I had pretty much forgotten all that and my 2nd encounter and even the feelings accompanying them. But, this story is so close to my own that it all came rushing back and making violently ill for a bit. I'm very glad her family moved. These dogmen don't take too kindly to being disrespected, such as interrupting their hunt or eating or hate having their dens messed with. It's better to be safe than sorry and leave them alone.

@B Freeman So I was planted up in a tree stand with a rifle and a Flir scout because I hunt when it’s dark out in then morning but there’s some light that birds are about, so it just makes it easier to look for deer, while I was there about a good 35-45 mins of sitting there, that’s when everything went dead silent, and I started to have the back of my neck start to have the hairs rise up and I felt uneasy about everything at that point because I was alone and had no cell reception in a dense forest, then I started hearing branches break about 50-60 feet away from me, so I went to go look with my flir and it just would not turn on what’s so ever so I just sat there listening to this thing move and it sounded massive, I felt like it knew I was close by and was looking for me, so I stayed in the tree for another 40 mins till I no longer felt in danger and high tailed it through the woods for a good 3-4 miles to my truck, but while I was running it felt like something was off in the distance watching me. Other than that one time I never felt threatened ofc I live in Maryland where we do have black bears in a certain area but they normally don’t scare me at all so I shrug them off besides this time it felt like something else.

I grew up in rural Maine many miles away from the closest town. My house was surrounded by thick forest that stretched for what seemed like forever in every direction except for the one road that ran through my township. I have a lot of siblings and we use to spend a lot of time in those woods growing up, but never at night. When the sun went down we stayed away. It just gave you a very creepy feeling.

This is probably going to scare you guys even more, but I have been thinking about all these strange creatures. Not only from MrBallen's stories, but the literal thousands of accounts of people encountering all different manner of creatures, and they are standing up on two legs at some point. Maybe people have not thought of this, but do you guys remember the accounts at Skinwalker Ranch and many other places where people report seeing a portal open up...the one at Skinwalker Ranch reported said it showed a portal open up about 3 feet off the ground and the man said he could see a blue sky and light inside even though it was night outside on earth and he would watch these strange black creatures hop out, and some of them on all fours and they take off running into the night? Lots of these accounts. I am thinking what if something has happened on earth rather recently, whether it be something like CERN, or this particular place we are in the galaxy that this happens every time we make a circle around the milky way, or a certain point in time, that this happens and there are actually hundreds of thousands of these portals now that can be opened, and something or we by accident have made it possible for these beings to open up portals and come into our world? And all of them are mostly at this point in remote locations, in national parks, etc. etc..... What happens if all of these thingies are laying low and eventually there will be tens of millions of them and then they all come out in the open? Perhaps this is the way the invasion happens? Over a long period of time? What if all these thingies are coming here now and are hell bent on taking over our nice planet here?

This story is giving me the worst case of anxiety 😅 I lived in the woods, in the mountains, in Washington. Our closest neighbor was 4-5 miles away. It was pitch black at night and sometimes I would get so bored, I would walk up our gravel driveway about 150 feet from the house and make a left onto a 2 lane mountain road that leads you straight to a river and bridge not incredibly far from the house. It was about 1/4 mile to the bridge. I would walk up this road in the middle of the night and as I looked off into the forest on each side of me, it was as if you were being watched. The trees looked like they moved and you always heard strange noises. That place was eerie.

I did my own research and apparently they were just wild wolves. The reason why they stood on their hind legs was because in their nature, they see standing up on their hind legs as them showing dominance over someone. Them being 8 feet tall, might just be a genetic detail they have. As for them trying really really hard to break in, they were either bloodthirsty or really hungry. Howling is part of their nature usually, and growling is to an extent a type of communication. It's weird though that they had a lot of intelligence that wolves don't usually have, which is very frightening to imagine from a really dominant animal

I remember a few years ago I visited the US to spend a vacation with some relatives in North Carolina. As a foreigner to the country it just stupefied me how lonely some of the houses in rural North Carolina were. The house were I stayed was part of a small huddle of about eight houses perched on the sides of a country road and surrounded by a dense forest. The nearest actual town was about half an hour's drive away. Each house had a large patio, so there wasn't much interaction with the neighbors either ( I think I only said hi to one of them once or twice. They returned the greeting politely enough, but clearly signaling they were not interesting in staying to socialize, and continued about their business ignoring me from then on.).

The room I slept in had this huge panoramic window that viewed into the dark forest, and beyond that the only thing separating me from the forest was a decorative wooden fence that anyone could leap over without much ado. I never felt safe there, and it was then that I understood part of the fascination rural Americans have with guns. I was certainly wishing I had one near me during those nights. Nothing really happened, just saw some shadows moving in the trees once or twice and I occasionally heard unfamiliar animal noises at night, but nothing concrete (I once woke up at three am after definitely hearing something trampling over dry leaves outside, but I was too scared to go out and check it out empty handed, and I didn't want to wake up my host without being certain of any concrete threat). Still, I was relieved when I returned to my home country to a more urbanized setting.

I am glad I did not hear this particular story back then, it would have destroyed me.

One thought I did have during this is a black bear with mature cubs. It’s not unusual for bears to have up to four cubs and hang with mom over a year. This would explain the standing up and climbing aspects of the story. It could be a bear in conflict that has been fed by other people and are looking for food. That could explain them trying to enter/approach the house. That would be enough to scare anyone let alone someone remote that is somewhat superstitious. The hair left over could be from rubbing otherwise they should have collected it if it is a unknown species. Retreating back to the woods before day because evolutionary black bears hate open spaces as they evolved with bigger predators and need the safety of the trees. Not trying to discredit or argue with anyone, just trying to give my biologist perspective on this case.

I saw on a moonlit night running across a field, in Dover Foxcroft, Maine a massively huge canine like creature. This was just after midnight in July of 2021. This creature crossed the road in front of me but far enough to avoid danger at an extremely high rate of speed. It had dark hair and extremely powerful legs and was an estimated width of my car not counting its long tail. It was so bizarre looking and hugely strong, I thought this must be some kind of movie stunt or set. That time I didn't turn around but got moving quickly. The terrain was open fields on both sides of the road. Terrifying speed from this creature 😳 😬. Whatever this creature was it did not seem a part of this planet. I have been trained to observe and report but even this was too terrifying to report. This creature did not appear to be fearful or afraid of my car at all. I was traveling at about 55mph and it was moving extremely fast.

Here's a theory for you. Eric set up a plan to scare his wife Shelly so badly that she'd practically beg Eric to keep guns nearby for protection. So he paid five of his friends to dress up like mysterious wild beast and terrorize his family. After they sold the property, Eric asked Shelly if she'll let him keep the guns as close as possible.

That would make sense if it weren't for the fact they sold the house because of what happened. Do you realize how much of a hassle that can be, especially after the house has been clawed and scuffed up like that? Nobody in their right mind would sell their house and then look for somewhere else to live, even if it was just in another part of town, simply because their spouse didn't want protection in the house. That wouldn't actually address the problem. Only a child or someone who is still extremely immature would come up with such a circuitous, convoluted solution to a problem that could be far more easily solved with an adult conversation, not to mention an experience like that wouldn't necessitate selling the house if keeping guns in the house was the goal, since that would be more than enough to change anyone's mind.

The person that owned the house before I lived in it thought it would be a good idea to put a closet in the middle of the living room which provides a lot of inconvenience as far as spatial concern. That was a horrible idea but here I am with an inconveniently placed closet anyways. Not all ideas that people come up with are going to be good ones. For the guy in the story, he probably thought all the hassle was worth it for his love of guns because an adult talk through likely was not going to get him anywhere. Besides that, it's just a fun theory to speculate on.

just started watching this and it sent shivers down my spine... I lived in Corinna, Maine a few years ago when I had a very similar expirience with these things. I thought I was crazy, and barely anyone believed me but I could have sworn I saw a wolf like creature standing on 2 legs. it moved at incredible speed and for some reason i got the coldest feeling that I was in danger... ever since then I don't go into the woods out back that place past 4, something tells me to stay away. I tried hunting out back the property recently but didn't stay out untill closing due to a sudden chill down my spine, I won't go back out there alone again... wierd things happen there from time to time, like feeling like your constantly watched, and other noises. I thought it was an urban legend but the only one I could compare it to was the Dwoyyo, but that's a Maryland urban legend... I'm just happy to know that I may not be entirely crazy after all!

This is probably my favourite story from MrBallen, but I do have a couple of questions

1.) Is there a record of the police call? that would help lend credence to the at least something happend
2.) Why did the family not take any photos of the damage to their house?
3.) If the scratches and damage to the house were so significant how did they fix it when they decided to sell the house?
- and who fixed it, are there any records
4.) The tufts of hair, the family could have sent them to an animal expert, or had them tested to see what creature they were from (assuming this is at least in the last decade)

I truly believe that there are strange living things on this beautiful planet that rather live in solitude and away from all the craziness that humans have created. These so called creatures most likely have been around for thousands of years and have perfected a way of not being able to be found or seen. Many people go missing every year and most of them disappear after going into one of our beautiful forests, Hmm...
