Lost Highway
Williams Hank Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm a rollin' stone all alone and lost
For a life of sin I have paid the cost
When I pass by all the people say
Just another guy on the lost highway

Just a deck of cards and a jug of wine
And a woman's lies makes a life like mine
O the day we met, I went astray
I started rolling down that lost highway

I was just a lad, nearly twenty two
Neither good nor bad, just a kid like you
And now I'm lost, too late to pray
Lord I take a cost, o the lost highway

Now boy's don't start to ramblin' round
On this road of sin are you sorrow bound

Take my advice or you'll curse the day
You started rollin' down that lost highway

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Hank Williams' song "Lost Highway" portray an individual who has been leading a life of sin, wandering aimlessly on a road leading towards the unknown. There is a sense of acceptance of his predicament, as he is aware that his choices have led him to a point of no return. He has paid the price for his past transgressions, and people perceive him as just another guy on a lost highway. He possesses only a deck of cards, a jug of wine, and the lies of a woman, which form the substance of his existence. The song highlights a moment of self-realization as the singer acknowledges his mistakes.

In the second verse, the song describes the singer as a lad of twenty-two, with no particular defiling qualities, yet he finds himself on a path that leads him to regret his decisions. The singer suggests that he is too far gone to ask for forgiveness, and he must face the consequences of his actions. In the final verse, the singer warns others not to follow in his footsteps as they will end up with the same fate. The song "Lost Highway" showcases the idea that the directional path we take in life can have irrevocable consequences, and we must be mindful of our actions.

Yep heavy metal musician here and love Hank both Sr and Jr.

Hank Williams is the original Bad Boy. He married a pretty woman. And he died in the back of a Cadillac. Anything to get away from Audry, right. And he so Loved her and he was her meal ticket. Bocephus has to love Audry. Hank Sr did too but...in the back of a car traveling to another gig?

Now everyone praises histalent even the opry in Nashville and The Country Music HLl of "shame".

I hope Hank is smiling down on all the musicals he inspired.

So dark this song is. Hank was haunted and lived the songs. Be it someone else wrote the lyrics or he did himself. But you feel it. Every word or every note
