Rubén Blades (born July 16, 1948) is a Panamanian salsa singer, songwriter, lawyer, actor, Latin jazz musician, and politician, performing musically most often in the Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz genres. As songwriter, Blades brought the lyrical sophistication of Central American nueva canción and Cuban nueva trova as well as experimental tempos and political inspired Nuyorican salsa to his music, creating thinking persons' (salsa) dance music. Blades has composed dozens of musical hits, the most famous of which is "Pedro Navaja," a song about a neighborhood thug who appears to die during a robbery (his song "Sorpresas" continues the story), inspired by "Mack the Knife." He also composed and sings what many Panamanians consider their second national anthem. The song is titled "Patria" (Fatherland).
He is an icon in Panama and is much admired throughout Latin America, and managed to attract 18% of the vote in his failed attempt to win the Panamanian presidency in 1994. In September 2004, he was appointed minister of tourism by Panamanian president Martín Torrijos for a five-year term. He holds a law degree from the University of Panama and a master's in international law from Harvard University.
Collaborations between Colón and Blades were recorded in New York. They recorded albums together from 1977 to 1982, although the two briefly reuinted for the album Tras la Tormenta in 1995.

Hiso pedazos de la fe
Solo quede en la telaraña
De los errores del ayer
Ella huracan y yo mentira
Que formula para peder
Lo que se quiere nos se olvida
Mas no habra nunca odio tan cruel
Que el que se proyecta del pasado
Y hace del presente la extension
De un amor feroz y equivocado
Que aun lastima nuestro corazón
Quiero incendiar nuestro pasado
Y hacerlo desaparecer
Ver a la luz de la candela
Los errores de mi ayer
Convertirse en polvo y en ceniza
Dando tranquilidad a mi ser
Ver como el recuerdo cicatriza
Pero no la herida que es Ud.
Como un huracan llego
Como un huracan se fue
Lo que se amo jamas se olvida
Aunque no pueda volver
Me dejo entre telarañas
De las memorias de ayer
Como un huracan llego
Como un huracan se fue
Dicen que no hay mal
Que por bien no venga
Yo no lo puedo creer
Como un huracan llego
Como un huracan se fue
Falso amor le di mi vida
Y hoy no lo puedo creer
Como un huraca llego
Como un huracan se fue
Prenderle fuego a mi pasado
Verlo desaparecer
Como un huracan llego
Como un huracan se fue
Y a la luz de la candela
Reirme mas no poder jajajaja
Como un huracan llego
Como un huracan se fue
Huracan de viento amargo
Ven y azotame otra vez
Como un huracan llego
Como un huracan se fue
El recuerdo cicatriza
Pero no el amor de ud
Un viento amargo
Va por mi vida
Haciendo estragos
Y habriendo heridas
Tu pecadora
Y yo arrepentido.

The lyrics of the song "Como un huracán" by Willie Colon and Ruben Blades are about a failed love affair and the pain it caused. The singer talks about how their partner destroyed them with their words and shattered their faith. They were left alone to deal with the mistakes of their past, feeling trapped like a spider caught in a web. The singer admits to being a liar, and it was not a recipe for success. They feel the intense pain of a love that went awry and still haunts them.
The chorus of the song repeats the analogy of the relationship to a hurricane - it came in like a destructive storm and left just as swiftly, leaving the singer tangled in memories of the past. They express a desire to burn their past to erase their mistakes and find peace. However, they also acknowledge that the pain of a lover's memory never goes away, and they are left with scars that time cannot erase. The song's final line is a plea to their former lover to come back and hurt them again if it means they can feel something again.

I gave my life to false love
Y hoy no lo puedo creer
And today I can't believe it
Prenderle fuego a mi pasado
To set fire to my past
Verlo desaparecer
And watch it disappear
Y a la luz de la candela
And in the candlelight
Reirme mas no poder jajajaja
I laugh uncontrollably
Huracan de viento amargo
Bitter wind hurricane
Ven y azotame otra vez
Come and strike me again
El recuerdo cicatriza
The memory heals
Pero no el amor de ud
But not your love
