Their music style is rooted in indie rock and has ambient and occasional shoegaze elements. Performances have been described as "entirely honest" and "deeply moving" with "captivating ambiance". While playing live, the band attempts to make the listener as much a part of the music as the band themselves by encouraging everyone to sing along.
They were nominated for two Juno Awards of 2008 and took home one of them: Alternative Album of the Year, and New Group of the Year (which they won).

10 A Long Flight
Wintersleep Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Throw my bones into the belly of the deep.
Whisper through my walkie talkie: "I am ready."
But I was not prepared to die.
Wipe the shadows from my mind,
My mind, my mind, my mind, my mind,
My mind, my mind, my mind.
I was not prepared for flight.
The opening lines of Wintersleep's song, A Long Flight, are poetic and striking. The image of wrapping feathers around oneself like a blanket is a powerful one, invoking a sense of comfort and insulation. However, the following line, "throw my bones into the belly of the deep," is a stark contrast. It suggests a descent into the unknown, perhaps into death itself. The line "whisper through my walkie talkie: 'I am ready,'" adds another layer of intrigue to the imagery - who is being addressed through the walkie talkie, and why are they ready? The final lines, "but I was not prepared to die, wipe the shadows from my mind," add a somber note to the song. The singer may have thought they were ready for something, but it seems they were not prepared for what was to come.
The repetition of "my mind" in the chorus adds to the sense of anxiety and unease. It suggests that the singer is attempting to regain control of their thoughts and emotions, perhaps in the face of some kind of trauma or crisis. The final line of the chorus, "I was not prepared for flight," echoes the previous lines about not being prepared to die. It suggests that the singer may have been forced into a situation where they had to face their fears head-on and take a leap of faith into the unknown.
Overall, A Long Flight is a song that explores themes of fear, uncertainty, and mortality. It paints a vivid picture of someone who is facing their fears head-on, but may not be fully prepared for the consequences. The repetition of certain phrases and imagery throughout the song helps to create a sense of unease and disorientation in the listener, making it a powerful and thought-provoking piece of music.
