Goodbye
Wynton Marsalis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't like goodbyes, tears or sighs
I'm not too good at leavin' time
I got no taste for grievin' time
No, no, not me
You've been my near one ever my dear one
I never thought that you could find another love
Of a different kind but it came to be
So now your future is looking up
Forget the past and go fill your loving cup
Remember, remember leavin' is fine
Oh, the world overhead has a clear new shine
I won't be grievin' now that you're leavin'
It's travelin' time and you must move on
Find someone that you can lean upon
And if I could arrange it, oh, would I care to change it
Not me

Today your future is looking up
And you forget the past, go forget it, and run fill your loving cup
Don't feel sorry for thinking that leavin' is fine
Now your world overhead has a clear new shine

I won't be grievin' just cause you're leavin'
It's travelin' time and we must move on
Find someone that you can lean upon
And if I could arrange it, oh, would I care to change it

Yes, I could arrange it, you think I care to change it
Not me

Overall Meaning

In Wynton Marsalis's song "Goodbye," the lyrics convey the singer's resistance to goodbyes and their aversion to the emotions that come with leaving someone behind. The singer admits to not being good at saying goodbye and not having the inclination for grieving. They express surprise that the person they are addressing has found another love, one of a different kind. Despite this, the singer encourages the person to embrace their future, forget the past, and find happiness in a new relationship.

The song suggests that the singer has come to terms with the situation and holds no resentment or bitterness towards the person they are addressing. They acknowledge that it is time to move on and find someone else to lean upon. The repeated phrase "not me" emphasizes the singer's detachment and lack of emotional investment in the past relationship. Ultimately, the lyrics reflect a sense of acceptance, growth, and the understanding that change is necessary for both parties involved.

I have been listening to music my entire life and there is no one that can "swing" like Wynton. RIP Pop Elis. Miss you!!

Wynton Marsalis has been criticized for not paying modern jazz. In all art forms, there are innovators. Not everyone is an innovator.Wynton's contribution to jazz is the fact that he brought jazz back to the listener . Jazz had lost its audience to musicians. Free jazz never captured the mainstream audience. Wynton also encouraged young people to appreciate jazz.

Marcus Roberts (the J Master) on piano, Bob Hurst on the bass and Jeff 'tain' Watts on the drums. As good as Wynton is playing here, it also proves Jeff is a tastefull drummer who has far more skills then many know him for. Most people only know the spectacular heavy drumming side but this is classy, relaxed drumming. Great song, great players!
