Xeno & Oaklander (aka Xeno and Oaklander) is a minimal wave / synth duo fro… Read Full Bio ↴Xeno & Oaklander (aka Xeno and Oaklander) is a minimal wave / synth duo from Brooklyn, NY, USA, comprising Sean McBride (Martial Canterel, Three To Forgotten) and Liz Wendelbo (Three To Forgotten). They began writing music in 2004 and they record their songs live in their studio and play analogue synthesizers and instruments exclusively. Their latest albums are Par Avion (June 2014, Ghostly) and Topiary (June 2016, Ghostly).

Other releases include: EP Vigils (2006, Xanten), single Saracen (2009, Wierd), Sentinelle (2009, Wierd) and Sets & Lights (2011, Wierd). Also, original tracks complied on Music For Ruins (2004, Xanten), Wierd Compilation (2006, Wierd) and Wierd Compilation Vol.II : Analogue Electronic Music 2008 (2008, Wierd).

Special editions include: Movements (June 2015, Ghostly), recorded live at the Xeno & Oaklander analog synth studio in Brooklyn, the 35 minute piece was inspired by travel in space and time. Field recordings gleaned during their travels are mixed in. Movements II (May 2017, Ghostly), released as a cassette available for sale exclusively at concerts on Xeno & Oaklander’s 2017 Spring European Tour, is representing Part 2 of the ambient electronic piece Movements and contains 7 tracks Theriac I, II and III as A side and Movements II A, B, C and D as B side. Moonlight (October 2017) is an evocative synth reverie. The track was originally released on vinyl in association with Electronic Sound magazine.

Its so good It’s so organic, so avant- gard, so original, familiar, exotic, poetic and moving. These two are on fire 🔥 hard to believe they can paint this wonderful, complicated yet simple musical landscape with only two people and a lot of synth firepower

To understand the lyrics read up on notion of the 'The Flaneur' - exemplified by Camus' book,'The Stranger' - early 20th century French literature on existentialism (Jean Paul Sartre - 'Being and Nothingness' and Simone De Bouvoir, again Albert Camus) alienation and the city up to 1960s, art scene aka surrealism, cubism, pop art; 'modernity,' Jean Paul Lyotard - Postmodernism - essentially it embraces what the experience is of contemporary alienation in urban society - very avante-garde circa turn of 20th century in French literature, art and architecture (Think - geometrics , linears, symmetry - grid design of city of Paris and Le Corbusier - the French architect who embraced this ethos - I'm in Asia and jetlagged so any typos are conceivable.) Parrellel German philosopher George Simmel wrote alot on alienation and the city - parrallel eras of writing on same subject of alienation but different root intelligentsia circa late 19th century ideologies (German Romantics vs French Existentialism).

The main inspiration for the song is the story "Heinrich von Ofterdingen" by the German writer Novalis:

"The parents have gone to bed and are asleep, the clock on the stairs ticks monotonously, the windows rattle with the wind, the chamber is lit up now and again with fitful gleams of moonlight.

The boy lay tossing on his bed, and thought of the stranger and his talk. 'It is not the treasures,' he said to himself, 'that have stirred in me such an unspeakable longing; I care not for wealth and riches. But that blue flower I do long to see; it haunts me and I can think and dream of nothing else.'"
