Take Care
Yo La Tengo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take care not to hurt yourself
Beware of the need for help
You might need too much
And people are such
Take care, please, take care

Some people read idea books
And some people have pretty looks
But if your eyes are wide
And all words aside
Take care, please, take care

This sounds a bit like goodbye
In a way it is I guess
As I leave your side
I've taken the air

Take care, please, take care
Take care, please, take care

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Yo La Tengo's song Take Care are fairly simple and straightforward on the surface, but there is quite a bit of depth and nuance to be found in the words as well. The repeated refrain of "take care" is clearly a plea of some kind, and the first couple of lines give some insight into what that plea might be about. The singer is warning someone else not to hurt themselves, and to be aware of the need for help. This could be interpreted in a number of ways - perhaps the singer is concerned about the other person's physical safety and well-being, or perhaps they are warning them about the dangers of emotional vulnerability.

The next line is particularly interesting: "You might need too much." It's not entirely clear what this means, but it hints at the idea that the other person might be asking for something that the singer or others cannot provide. The use of the word "people" instead of "I" or "we" in the second half of this line adds to the sense of ambiguity - are "people" the ones who are unable to provide what the other person needs, or are they the ones who are asking for too much? Either way, it's clear that the singer is trying to caution the other person about something.

The second verse of the song switches things up a bit, with the singer contrasting two different ways of being: reading "idea books" and having "pretty looks." Again, there's a sense of ambiguity here - are these two things mutually exclusive? Is one better than the other? It's hard to say for sure, but the singer seems to be suggesting that there's more to life than outward appearances or intellectual pursuits. The final two lines of the verse are particularly intriguing: "But if your eyes are wide / And all words aside." It's not clear what the singer means by this exactly, but there's a sense that there's something deeper and more meaningful that can be found beyond appearances or words.
