The song was originally the sixth track on MGK’s 2020 album, "Tickets To My Downfall", before he removed it for an unknown reason.
MGK told NME in March 2020:
"Me and YUNGBLUD got together to drink some beer after Juice [WRLD] had passed because we were just like, ‘Times are short. Let’s link up.’ And the weirdest night happened, and we went to the studio the next day and wrote a song about that. And that felt like a smash, too."
YUNGBLUD told Apple Music the week weird! came out:
"This song is a direct representation of mine and Machine Gun Kelly’s relationship. We wanted the song to just make people lose control. We wrote it on a night where we were both sad because we had lost a colleague. And we were just like, ‘You’re way too cool to be acting sad tonight.’ We wanted to resonate the idea of you being at your favorite show, with your best friends, going absolutely crazy."
In December 2019, Barker posted an Instagram story of MGK and YUNGBLUD in the studio together. Barker played drums on MGK’s June 2019 track “I Think I’m OKAY,” which also featured YUNGBLUD.

'Cause it don't rain but tonight it's pourin' (tonight it's pourin')
Uh, you like it more when I ignore it (you like it, yeah)
And since I left, LA got boring (since I've been gone)
Ayy, I'm back on my bullshit
You're a Libra, I'm a Taurus
Heard you hooked back up with your exAnd now you're asleep on my doorstep
You're way too hot to be actin' like that
Actin' like that
Actin' like that
You're way too hot to be actin' like that
Actin' like that
Actin' like that
I don't wanna talk right now
You're asleep outside my house
You're way too hot to be actin' like that
Actin' like that
Actin' like that
(I love this bit)
I heard it today, you got on a plane to another state
I think I'm okay, never gonna change my mind
Never gonna change my mind
And I don't think today is the last time
That the bright lights hit the dark side
I can see that look in your eyes
I can see that look in your eyes, yeah
Now I can't sleep, I'm all alone
And what we reaped is what we've sown
So can we meet somewhere in the middle?
You're way too hot to be actin' like that
Actin' like that
Actin' like that
You're way too hot to be actin' like that
Actin' like that
Actin' like that
I don't wanna talk right now (right now)
You're asleep outside my house (you're asleep outside my house)
You're way too hot to be actin' like that
Actin' like that
Actin' like that
I'm goin' out my head
I fell in love again
And I know that you'll regret me in the morning
When you are gone again
(Yeah)
You're way too hot to be actin' like that
Actin' like that
Actin' like that
You're way too hot to be actin' like that
Actin' like that
Actin' like that
I don't wanna talk right now (I don't want to talk right now)
You're asleep outside my house (you're asleep outside my house)
You're way too hot to be actin' like that

Yungblud's song "Acting Like That" depicts the aftermath of a break-up, where he is confronted by his ex-girlfriend at four in the morning. The singer implies that his ex-girlfriend is showing a mixed set of emotions towards him, where she is acting hot and cold. Yungblud is trying to keep his distance, but he cannot help being drawn back in by his feelings for her. The lyrics suggest that the relationship between the two of them ended tumultuously, with the line "what we reaped is what we've sown" indicating that the pain they are feeling is the result of the choices they made.
Yungblud's song "Acting Like That" is an emotionally charged track that delves into the complexities of relationships, especially the difficulties of going through a breakup. The song captures the feelings of hurt and longing through its use of vivid imagery and emotive lyrics. The chorus repetition of "You're way too hot to be acting like that" gives the impression of a love-hate relationship where the singer is frustrated yet enamored by his ex. The line "Bright lights hit the dark side" adds a note of poignancy to the song, suggesting that despite the end of the relationship, there might still be hope for reconciliation.
