Polka
Yves Klein Blue Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Brother hold your head this way,
And bustle to the front of the line;
'cause if they catch your eyes before you get inside
Well, you'll never be allowed.
People got a name for us
'cause we escape the strain of the days
Oh we stretch at the sides and bend in the middle
But we never ever break.

But if you're feeling that way now,
Or if you ever feel so inclined -
Skip past the doors of boring forty somethings and rise.
Oh, and if you want to lose your frown,
Or your name or even your face -
Lick up a dream that seemingly sings with whistling neon breath.

Come and have a drink with us,
A little wine or a nice champagne?
Oh thanks that's nice, and I would decline,
But at night things seem to change.
People got a name for us,
'cause we escape the strain of the days -
Oh we stretch at the sides and bend in our minds
But well never ever change.

And if you're feeling that way now,
Or if you ever feel so inclined,
Well, kick in the shins of all those fucking whingers and rise.
Oh and if you want to lose your frown,
Or your name or even your face,
Lick up a dream that seemingly sings with whistling neon breath.

Sid was at the gates of dawn,
And Jimmy said ride the snake:
So we bent our spoons and howled at the moon
To find what science replaced.
And it turns out it ain't that much
Though I may have missed it in the haze -
Oh drips in the mind and fills up your eyes
But well never be the same.
(Shhh)
But if you're ever coming down,
Or if you ever take too much -
Remember that's much better than never ever getting enough.
So if your want to lose your frown,
Or your name or even your face,
Lick up a dream that seemingly screams with rushing neon death.

All your spirits gone, and you are barley alive.
You hand me a smoke, though its like you hardly notice.
And its sad I suppose - When I look into your eyes you say:
It seems to go this way, no matter what's at stake,
Oh it seems to go this way with everything I start!

(Solo)

So if you're feeling that way now,
Or if you ever feel so inclined -
Skip past the doors of boring forty somethings and rise.
Oh but if you want to loose your frown,

Or your name or even your face -
Lick up a dream that seemingly sings with rushing neon death.

Overall Meaning

The song "Polka" by Yves Klein Blue is an anthem for the free-spirited individuals who refuse to conform to societal norms. The first verse begins with the singer urging his brother to hold his head up high and make his way to the front of the line, emphasizing the importance of not being caught up in the eyes of those who would try to keep him from living a fulfilling life. The chorus repeats the message that people often have a name for those who choose to break free from the strains of everyday life, yet they continue to stretch and bend without breaking.

The second verse builds upon this message, urging the listener to skip past the doors of the boring forty-somethings and rise above the norm. The singer encourages the listener to be open to trying new things and to not be afraid of losing their name, face or even their frown. The bridge of the song references the great social and musical icons of the past, Sid Vicious and Jim Morrison, and how they inspired people to break free from societal norms, despite being misunderstood by society. In the end, the lyrics suggest that even though the journey to freedom may not be easy, it is always worth it in the end.

you will be denied entry and never get the chance to experience something new.

People got a name for us
Some call us rebels,

'cause we escape the strain of the days
because we find ways to have fun and escape from the everyday grind.

But we never ever break.
But we never give up or surrender.

Or if you ever feel so inclined -
Or if you ever feel the urge to break free,

Skip past the doors of boring forty somethings and rise.
Skip those mundane activities and strive for something new and exciting.

Oh, and if you want to lose your frown,
If you want to be happy and carefree again,

Come and have a drink with us,
Come join us for a drink,

A little wine or a nice champagne?
Would you like some wine or champagne?

Oh thanks that's nice, and I would decline,
No thanks, I appreciate the offer, but I'll pass.

But at night things seem to change.
But things can be different at night and more exciting.

And if you're feeling that way now,
And if you're feeling rebellious now,

Or if you ever feel so inclined,
Or if you feel the urge to break free,

Well, kick in the shins of all those fucking whingers and rise.

Sid was at the gates of dawn,
Sid was at a pivotal point in his life,

And Jimmy said ride the snake:
And Jimmy encouraged him to take a risk and try something new.

So we bent our spoons and howled at the moon
We did whatever it took to achieve our goals, even if it seemed crazy.

To find what science replaced.
To find what we have lost in our modern, scientific world.

And it turns out it ain't that much
And it turns out that we didn't actually lose that much after all.

Though I may have missed it in the haze -
Though it might have been hard to see through the confusion.

Oh drips in the mind and fills up your eyes
Oh, it fills your mind and makes your eyes water with emotion.

But we'll never be the same.
But we'll never be able to go back to the way things were before.

(Shhh)
(Quiet whisper)

But if you're ever coming down,
But if you're ever feeling low after experiencing something great,

Or if you ever take too much -
Or if you ever indulge in excess,

Remember that's much better than never ever getting enough.
It's better to have lived and experienced something to the fullest than never to have experienced it at all.

So if your want to lose your frown,
So if you want to be happy and carefree again,

Or your name or even your face,
Or even change your identity entirely,

Lick up a dream that seemingly screams with rushing neon death.
Pursue a dream that is ambitious and makes your heart race with excitement and fear.

All your spirits gone, and you are barley alive.
You've lost all your motivation and feel like you're barely hanging on.

You hand me a smoke, though its like you hardly notice.
You offer me a cigarette, but you seem absent-minded and lost in thought.

And its sad I suppose - When I look into your eyes you say:
It's a sad situation, and when I try to connect with you emotionally, you say:

It seems to go this way, no matter what's at stake,
This seems to be how life goes, no matter what risks we take.

Oh it seems to go this way with everything I start!
It feels like I always end up in the same place, no matter what I try to do.

(Solo)
(Instrumental solo)

So if you're feeling that way now,
So if you're feeling rebellious now,

Or if you ever feel so inclined -
Or if you ever feel the urge to break free,

Skip past the doors of boring forty somethings and rise.
Take the leap and go for something more exciting and fulfilling.

Oh but if you want to loose your frown,
If you want to be happy and carefree again,

Or your name or even your face -
Or even change your identity entirely,

Lick up a dream that seemingly sings with rushing neon death.
Pursue a dream that is ambitious and makes your heart race with excitement and fear.

I have been listening to this for 12 years and it still beats anything on the radio.

@Bisschoffe

I hate the fact that I have only just discovered this band and they are no longer together! They are awesome!

@matildepiovano1540

I discovered this band one week ago 💀

@babaganoujband

This video was shot on like the hottest day of the year. My hair looks like it has some product in it but that's just sweat because for some stupid reason we decided I should wear a leather jacket. The shoot was all day and all through the heat of midday. I went back home to Bardon (just around the corner) at about 4 or so and my grandmothers 90th or something was that day and my family were all there and were disappointed I didn't wanna hang out. I think I fell asleep.

@JesusRocksTryPrayin

Under rated album. One bizarre, fantastic tune after another.

@kymmington

I saw these guys live at the Semi Permanent after party last night and they were really good. They had great energy on the stage and sounded great.
