Fear
Zakk Wylde Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The sun that's set on our souls
All that's lost as the day is old
When the truth becomes one big lie
So low you never know when you're high
And you thought that you knew it all
Think again, in the end we all fall
When the truth becomes one big lie
So low you never know when you're high

Oh, back home
Oh, back home
Oh, the fear of being alone

The floors that rattle and shake through my head
The doors that slam that wake me in bed
When the truth becomes one big lie
So low you never know when you're high

Oh, back home
Oh, back home
Oh, the fear of being alone
Oh, the fear of being alone

Oh, the fear of being alone

Oh, the fear of being alone
Oh, the fear of being alone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Zakk Wylde's song "Fear" explore themes of loss, deception, and loneliness. The opening lines, "The sun that's set on our souls / All that's lost as the day is old," set a desolate tone, suggesting that the singer has experienced a profound sense of loss. The repeated refrain of "When the truth becomes one big lie / So low you never know when you're high" underscores the idea that the singer has been deceived, perhaps by someone they trusted or by society at large. The repeated use of the phrase "Oh, back home" suggests that the singer is longing for a place of safety and comfort, perhaps a place from their past where they felt more secure.

The central theme of the song seems to be the fear of being alone. The lines "The floors that rattle and shake through my head / The doors that slam that wake me in bed" create a sense of unease and suggest that the singer is struggling to find peace even in their own home. This fear of isolation is further underscored by the last lines of the song, which repeat the phrase "Oh, the fear of being alone" three times.

Overall, "Fear" is a somber and introspective song that explores the dark side of human emotions. It suggests that even when we think we know the truth about ourselves and our lives, we can still be deceived and left feeling lost and alone.

on Lost Prayer

It's pretty obvious to me that the video to this song is about the corruption of this young boy. He falls into an evil trap of sex addiction and is controlled by demonic thoughts, represented by the red-masked demon. This lifestyle is unsatisfying and in the end he is chewed up and thrown away, so to speak, by those he used and who used him. He also deprived himself of real love from the girl/young woman/angel because of his inner demons and continued bad choices.
