In the late 1950's she came to the attention of Dutch record-producer and songwriter Johnny Hoes. Her first single, "Ach Vaderlief, Toe Drink Niet Meer" (Dear Father, Please Stop Drinking) came out in 1959.
Hoes wrote the bulk of her songs, until their split in 1975. After this split she had only moderate succes. Still she sustained a dedicated -and typical- following of both working-class and highbrow audiences.
1986 saw her comeback with a (now legendary) concert at the Paradiso, Amsterdam. The live version of the song Mexico from this concert became her best known hit to date. A DVD of this concert was released together with a 5-CD overview of her career as the box-set "Mijn Leven" (My Life) in 2004 through Universal.
She had 29 top 40 hits in Holland between 1959 and 1993.

The lyrics of "Het Portretje" by Zangeres Zonder Naam evoke deep emotions and nostalgia as they describe the sentimental value of a small, faded portrait that holds immense significance in the singer's life. The portrait is a cherished item that hangs in the room, sits on the buffet, and is carried throughout the day by the singer. It is placed on the bedside cabinet, and before going to sleep at night, the singer pauses to gaze upon it with profound sentiment and reverence.
The singer expresses how this small, yellowed portrait is a treasured possession that everyone carefully preserves. In quiet moments, the singer looks upon it with a mixture of wistfulness and gratitude. The portrait serves as a source of comfort and strength during difficult times, offering courage, trust, and guidance because it holds the image of the singer's mother. The presence of the mother's image on the portrait symbolizes a connection to love, nurturing, and maternal protection, providing solace in times of trouble.
The lyrics further delve into the theme of human relationships, highlighting the transient nature of friendships that may falter when faced with adversity. While one may have many friends during prosperous times, true companionship is revealed when struggles arise. In moments of distress and loneliness, it is only the simple, unassuming figure depicted on the treasured portrait who consistently shares the burden of sorrow with the singer. The portrayal of this steadfast support contrasts with the fleeting nature of superficial friendships.
Throughout the song, the small, faded portrait continues to hold a profound significance in the singer's life. It is described as a source of solace, guidance, and companionship during challenging times. The lasting imprint of the mother’s image on the portrait symbolizes enduring maternal love and a steadfast presence, offering unwavering support and understanding. Ultimately, "Het Portretje" eloquently captures the enduring bond between mother and child, emphasizing the comfort and strength derived from the timeless connection represented by the cherished portrait.

Dan zit je alleen met je zorgen
Then you are alone with your worries
Geen mens die je smarten dan ziet
No one sees your sorrows
Alleen dat eenvoudige mensje
Only that simple person
Dat deelt steeds met jou je verdriet
That always shares your sorrow with you
