How many people are going to the 2de Maasvlakte on a daily basis?

There are mainly just a few industrial oil, coal and ship container companies. It is not meant for tourists.
And many of those companies have "pendel bussen" (shuttle busses). I know, my brother in law works there. Already as long as 25+ years or so. He usually takes the shuttle bus (picks him up at his home). And occasionally he takes his motorbike.
And there even is a bicycle path going all the way to the end of the Maasvlakte. I know. I cycled there myself. Very easy to use for a speed pedelec.

Regardless, yes! There might be places in ... whatever country, including the Netherlands ... where you cannot go to by foot, bicycle or public transportation. By all means take the car in these cases.

But this is not true for most commuting destinations.
And even when it is true for some destinations it often does not have to be that way.
Better designed mixed use mode cities - with emphasizes on public transportation, pedestrians and cyclists - usually is a/the viable solution.

Lived in Rotterdam in the early seventies.
I was impressed to see so much of empty space .
(comming right from the then newly - beautiful- build
central station you bumped
on an improvised deer park
for children, in the middle
of what used to be the city
before it was completely
whiped-out by the bombs
of may 1940.
Hearing the stories of Rotterdammers who servived made tears in my eyes.
The man who was my landlord described how they
were forced to clean-up hundreds of dead bodies.

40 years later I visited Rotterdam and again tears came to my eyes
seeing so much efford was done to rebuild the city ...

@Not Just Bikes Good point, you're right. What I meant to say is: despite everything, I still think NL is more car-centric than people often realize.

The majority of Dutch people live in small and medium-sized suburban towns (Ridderkerk instead of Rotterdam, or Amstelveen instead of Amsterdam). Geographer Josse de Voogd calls this "Middenland" or "Middle Country": https://twitter.com/jossedevoogd/status/795635206661214208

And in most of these places, people tend to drive to work rather than take transit. Cycling infrastructure in these towns is great, but cycling serves local destinations only.

e.g. Ridderkerk-Rotterdam, using Google Maps:
Bike: 50 min
Transit: 1 hour
Car: 21 min.

“Water taxis go uncomfortably fast” - so, like regular taxis..

utterbullspit

Got a taxi in New Orleans once and the guy was the fastest driver I've ever gotten. Too bad they aren't all like that though.

@Neighborhood Puffin or in my experience, Birmingham.

You missed a 7th way: the autonomous mini busses at Kralingse Zoom, called Park Shuttles.

Also, if you're on a Watertaxi and you slip the captain a bit of beer money, they can make the ride wilder than a rollercoaster for you.

Rhine0Cowboy

@Wim Ahlers Had the same experience. It wasn't allowed to walk the same route as the shuttles, but obviously that was ignored by anyone that depended on that route from the metro station. Also, there were zero places to go get some lunch. I vaguely remember a gas station relatively nearby, but it being hard to reach by foot.

Daan 't Hart

Well the shuttles do not drive anymore from Kralingse Zoom, as there's maintanance (or they mey be shutdown because of corona), i never see them driving anymore :(
