Dream Of The Everyday Housewife
k.d. lang Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She looks in the mirror and stares at the wrinkles
That weren't there yesterday
And thinks of the young man that she almost married
What would he think if he saw her this way?

She picks up her apron in little girl-fashion
As something comes into her mind
Slowly starts dancing remembering her girlhood
And all of the boys she had waiting in line

Oh, such are the dreams of the everyday housewife
You see everywhere any time of the day
An everyday housewife who gave up the good life for me

The photograph album she takes from the closet
And slowly turns the page
And carefully picks up the crumbling flower
The first one he gave her now withered with age

She closes her eyes and
Touches the house dress that suddenly disappears
And just for the moment she's wearing the gown
That broke all their minds back so many years

Oh, such are the dreams of the everyday housewife
You see everywhere any time of the day
An everyday housewife who gave up the good life for me

Oh, such are the dreams of the everyday housewife
You see everywhere any time of the day
An everyday housewife who gave up the good life for me

Oh, such are the dreams of the everyday housewife
You see everywhere any time of the day

Overall Meaning

The song "Dream of the Everyday Housewife" by k.d. lang explores the emotional and psychological struggles faced by a married woman as she contemplates her life choices. The first verse describes the woman looking in the mirror and noticing her wrinkles, which leads her to think about the young man she almost married and how he would react to her aging appearance. This shows how she is grappling with her own sense of worth and value as a woman, and how societal pressures to look youthful and beautiful can take a toll on one's self-esteem.

The second verse portrays the woman picking up her apron in a childish manner and reminiscing about her youth, specifically about the boys who once pursued her. This highlights how she may be trapped in a mundane and unfulfilling life as a housewife, longing for the excitement and adventure of her younger years. The chorus repeats how these dreams and desires are common to all housewives, who have given up their own aspirations for the sake of their families.

The final verse features the woman looking through an old photo album and discovering a withered flower that was once given to her by her spouse. She then imagines herself in a glamorous gown, representing her longing for a more exciting and beautiful life outside of her current domestic circumstances. Overall, the song paints a poignant and relatable picture of the difficulties faced by many everyday housewives who often struggle to balance their own desires and dreams with their responsibilities as wives and mothers.

She should have done it like Miss Chatelaine but I guess she had her reasons.   I don't think the lyrical cadence is suited to this AT ALL.   It is one thing to find a varation within a lyrical flow and improvise upon it.   It is another thing entirely to sound like you downed a few quualudes and walked into a David Lynch soundtrack.   I can see the political and social reasons for the tempo and delivery.  i just think it robs the song of all beauty.

I agree with you completely, and shockingly, with her fantastic usual timing and vocal, it leaves you going "what the..." Love so much of her stuff that I just cant't promote this other than it was a great homage to Glen Campbell.

well the unrealistic view of women is being scoffed at in this version.  fair play.
