do it yourself
sprites Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I could never know
I taught you ever chord and every note
I gave you every word and song I wrote
And your career took off

I could only hope
You'd take me all the way or wait at home
I wanted you to stay and never go
Never go at all

Never start a band with a best friend
Never shake hands
Never make plans
You should really find somebody else
You ought to go it alone
You ought to do it yourself

Why do people change?
We used to want the same and share the stage
We played at every show and every game
And it became less fun

I can only say
I hope you never make the same mistake
I'll find another plan, another way
And I will still go on

Never start a band with a best friend
Never shake hands
Never make plans
You should really find somebody else
You ought to go it alone
You ought to do it yourself

Never start a band with a best friend
Never shake hands
Never make plans
You should really find somebody else

Never start a band with a best friend
Never shake hands
Never make plans
Never loan an instrument
You should really find somebody else

You ought to go it alone
You ought to do it yourself

Overall Meaning

The song "Do It Yourself" by Sprites tells the story of a person who is reflecting on a past relationship with their former best friend, who they started a band with. They express regret for having made that decision because their once-shared love for music became less enjoyable as the band began to take off in popularity. The singer feels like they were the one who put in much effort into making the band successful- they had to teach their friend every chord and note, give them every word and song they wrote. They had hoped that their friend would take them all the way or that their friend would have stayed behind if they couldn't, but instead, their friend went on to have a successful career while the singer was left alone with the aftermath of the band's break up. The singer shares the lesson they learned - never start a band with a best friend, never shake hands, never make plans. Instead, one should find somebody else or go it alone and do it yourself.

This song conveys the pain and difficulty that can come with failing relationships or realizing that one has made a mistake. It also shares advice for others who may be looking to start a band or any venture with a friend- cautioning against getting too comfortable or expecting too much. One interesting aspect about the song is that it was released in 2003, which was a time when the indie music scene was growing and many new bands were starting up. The song was likely relatable to many who were going through similar experiences, making it a memorable addition to the genre. Another interesting fact is that Sprites is a project led by Jason Korzen, a musician who has also worked with other indie acts such as The Magnetic Fields and The Postmarks.

Love it! More of this please! I am a dev struggling with pixel art and I would love a series on small (16x16) pixel art animation :)

Summer Gamer

@Mart Lepanen how are you doing with pixel art now? I’m actually interested in how far you grew

Jack

Any updates on the 16x16 series? I started using GB Studio and since it’s meant to be flashed to a game boy, the character limits are restricted to that size.

I have seen quite a number of pixel art teaching videos, this is one of the best so far. You are willing to share the key pointers which is lacking in other Youtuber's viedos. Keep it going. I foresee more subscribers on the way to your videos. I have not seen the 45 degrees technique anywhere else. Thanks for sharing.
