The singles were “The Tide Is High” (a cover of the reggae group The Paragons’ “The Tide Is High”) and “Rapture” (the first song that contains rap that reached number 1 on US singles charts).
For producer Mike Chapman’s convenience, the album was recorded in Los Angeles, California, making it the first Blondie album to be recorded outside of New York City.
According to guitarist Chris Stein, a working title for the album was “Coca Cola” since it sounded very American but the company didn’t give them permission.
Autoamerican reached number 3 on UK charts, number 7 on US charts and number 8 on Australian charts.
