DeJ Loaf was born in Detroit, Michigan and raised on the east side of the city in the Fairview Housing projects. Growing up, she would often listen to music with her parents and grandmother, ranging "from 2Pac to Rakim to Miles Davis." Her father was killed when she was aged 4. A self-described "good kid and a decent student" who mostly kept to herself, she began writing her own original music as early as 9 years old. She graduated high school in 2009, played basketball up to the junior varsity level, and later attended Saginaw Valley State University to study nursing for three semesters before deciding to focus on a full-time music career.

Come from skatin' now we skatin' escalates
Never show your hand, learned that when we was playin' spades
Rappin' 'bout my life, man, this shit gon' get me paid, yeah
Boss a nigga up, RIP Blade
The people want a party, don't shoot the DJ
He with the other side, we gon' spin the DJ
Notorious B, havin' sons like CJ
I remember when we used to shop at 7 Days
I remember when we used to shop at 7 Days
Grandma in the basement, whippin' up 'caine
My grandma, she was different, ain't carry no cane
Me and my lil' brothers like Pinky and the Brain
If I tell you that I love you, I just hope you feel the same
Take me to another world, we like Willy and Dwayne
Yeah, we like Willy and Dwayne
I'm big dog, but they gon' talk like they my size
Ain't married, but I got ties to the Roc like I'm Ty Ty
(This that bird call)
I'm big dog, but they gon' talk like they my size
Ain't married, but I got ties to the Roc like I'm Ty Ty
I'm big dog, but they gon' talk like they my size
Ain't married, but I got ties to the Roc like I'm Ty Ty
Check just in, NSYNC
Chest, hit his lid, don't blink
I could turn this shit into somethin' you won't believe
Crip nigga rollin' up my weed
Man, I was juvenile, 400 Degrees
Leave a nigga with a turtleneck, rollin' up my sleeves
You ain't heard of that, you niggas make-believe
My niggas young and they restless, yeah
My niggas young and they reckless, woah
I tell my own story, woah
We stayed a couple doors down from Gloria
So many rules in my hood, Euphoria
Make it clap, uh, just like the nola (make it clap)
Mama know her baby a soldier
All I gotta do is snap my wrists
Get under my skin and I stick my pits
I'm big dog, but they gon' talk like they my size
Ain't married, but I got ties to the Roc like I'm Ty Ty
(This that bird call)
I'm big dog, but they gon' talk like they my size
Ain't married, but I got ties to the Roc like I'm Ty Ty
I'm big dog, but they gon' talk like they my size
Ain't married, but I got ties to the Roc like I'm Ty Ty
Big Doberman Pinchers, stand by the fences
I believe in my city, I still bet on the Pistons
Church on every corner, the pastors get it
Why the fuck you takin' shots, you know you passed your limit
Get buffed up, soon as they pass me spinach
You went and copped that shit soon as you seen me in it
Brand new whip, you can't even hop in it
Feelin' like P, yeah, bitch, it's no limit
I'm big dog, but they gon' talk like they my size
Ain't married, but I got ties to the Roc like I'm Ty Ty
(This that bird call)

Ain't married, but I got ties to the Roc like I'm Ty Ty
I'm big dog, but they gon' talk like they my size
Ain't married, but I got ties to the Roc like I'm Ty Ty
The song "Bird Call" by Dej Loaf begins with the lines "Come from skatin' now we skatin' escalates, never show your hand, learned that when we was playin' spades." This could be interpreted as a reference to growing up in a tough environment where you have to constantly evolve and be strategic in order to survive. The line "Rappin' 'bout my life, man, this shit gon' get me paid, yeah" suggests that the artist is using her music to narrate her personal journey and hopes to profit from her experiences. The line "Boss a nigga up, RIP Blade" could be a shoutout to Blade Icewood, a popular rapper from Detroit who was tragically killed in 2005, but whose influence on the city's rap scene lives on.
The next verse references NSYNC, which seems out of place at first, but is actually a clever reference to the band's hit "Dirty Pop" which includes the line "Bird is flockin' around, you just can't ignore." Dej Loaf is essentially saying that she is the bird that people can't ignore, and that she is here to stay. The line "My niggas young and they restless, yeah, my niggas young and they reckless, woah" could be interpreted as a comment on how many young people in Detroit feel like they don't have many options or opportunities, and so they turn to reckless behavior. The chorus repeats the line "I'm big dog, but they gon' talk like they my size" which suggests that even though Dej Loaf feels like she's at the top of her game, there will always be people trying to bring her down.
Overall, "Bird Call" is a song about rising above adversity and making a name for oneself, even when others try to hold you back. It's a statement of confidence and defiance, and serves as a showcase of Dej Loaf's skills as a rapper and lyricist.
