Redmond began her studies of frame drums with Glen Velez in 1981. She later formed an all-female frame drumming group called Mob of Angels. She has also performed with Steve Gorn.
In 1997 she published a book entitled When the Drummers Were Women: A Spiritual History of Rhythm, a comprehensive history of the frame drum focusing particularly on its use by female performers dating back to ancient times. (New York: Three Rivers Press. ISBN 0-609-80128-7.)
The February 2000 issue of DRUM! Magazine listed Layne Redmond as one of the 53 Heavyweight Drummers Who Made A Difference in the '90s.
