The album was recorded between June and October 2009 by the Depreciation Guild's most widely-known line-up, vocalist/guitarist/programmer Kurt Feldman and brothers Christoph (guitar) and Anton (percussion) Hochheim, at Benelli Sound Labs in Chicago, Illinois. Josh Eustis (of Telefon Tel Aviv) worked closely with the band on the album as both engineer and producer.
Spirit Youth marked a huge shift in sound for the Depreciation Guild, even compared to July 2009's "Dream About Me" single. The album replaced their prior work's upfront jagged walls of sound with sleeker, more polished vocals and guitar, subtler chiptune elements, and new types of instrumentation in the form of keyboards and Anton Hochheim's live drumming. Additionally, it was also the only Depreciation Guild recording on which bass guitar was played; Feldman performed it on the record, but final Depreciation Guild member (and future Ice Choir member) Raphael Radna was recruited to play the instrument at live shows.
The deluxe Japanese Fastcut Records release of Spirit Youth contained two demos, "Sunfaded" and "Invisible Love," that were never made available anywhere else. It remains unknown whether they were demos from the Spirit Youth sessions or recorded after the album's completion, but the fact that "Invisible Love" contained no Famicom programming—and that Feldman was becoming increasingly dissatisfied with writing chipmusic near the end of the Depreciation Guild's lifespan as he started the Ice Choir—makes the latter option more likely.
