He made his professional début in 2002 with the self-released single "Tabi no owari ni" (「旅の終わりに」、At journey's end) as Takeshi Komatsubara (小松原たけし), and changed his artist name to Takeshi Matsubara for his major label début, "Kanazawa bôkyôka" (「金沢望郷歌」、Kanazawa homesick blues) in 2005, which peaked at #29 on the Oricion Singles top 200, and spent 79 weeks on the chart.
