The three formed the group in high school and caught the attention of producer Prince Paul with a demo tape of the song "Plug Tunin'". With its playful wordplay, innovative sampling, and witty skits, the band's debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, has been called "a hip hop masterpiece."
The album was the band's biggest commercial success to date, with subsequent ones selling progressively less, despite receiving high praise from critics. They were influential in the early stages of rapper/actor Mos Def's career, and are a core part of the Spitkicker collective. They are the second longest standing Native Tongues group, after the Jungle Brothers. In 2006, the group won a Grammy for their collaboration with Gorillaz on the single "Feel Good Inc."
In early 2015, they announced plans to release a Kickstarter funded upcoming 9th studio album and the Anonymous Nobody... in September 2015; it was released on August 26, 2016. The album tracks are said to be the result of multiple improvised jam sessions. The album also features guest appearances from artists such as Damon Albarn, Little Dragon, David Byrne, 2 Chainz and Snoop Dogg.

Me Myself and I
De La Soul Lyrics
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Tell me, mirror, what is wrong?
Can it be my de la clothes
Or is it just my de la song?
What I do ain't make-believe
People say I sit and try
But whan it comes to being de la
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
Now you tease my plug one style
And my plug one spectacles
You say plug one and two are hippies
No, we're not, that's pure plug bull
Always pushing that we've formed an image
There's no need to lie
When it comes to being plug one
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
Proud, I'm proud of what I am
Poems I speak are plug two type
Please oh please let plug two be
Himself, not what you read or write
Right is wrong when hype is written
On the soul, de la that is,
Style is surely our own thing
Not the false disguise of showbiz
De la soul is from the soul
And this fact I can't deny
Strictly from the dan called stuckie
And from me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
Glory, glory hallelu
Glory for plugs one and two
But that glory's been denied
By kizids and dookie eyes
People think they dis my person
By stating I'm darkly pack
I know this so I point at q-tip
And he states, 'black is black'
Mirror mirror on the wall,
Shovel chestnuts in my path
Please keep on up with the nuts
So I don't get in aftermath
But if I do I'll calmly punch them
In the fourth day of July
'Cause they tried to mess with
Third degree, that's me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I

I knew we were seeing some of the best back then that period had some amazing ground breaking music, and it hasn't been replicated since, I'd say that is the definition of a golden age.

So much legend in such a short period.
The whole thing went to crap when sampling became untenable.

[Verse 1 - Dove]
Mirror mirror on the wall
Tell me mirror, what is wrong?
Can it be my De La Clothes
Or is it just my De La Soul?
What I do ain't make-believe

But when it comes to being De La
It's just me myself and I

It's just me myself and I

It's just me myself and I
[Verse 2 - Posdnuos]
Now you tease my Plug One style
And my Plug One spectacles
You say Plug One and Two are hippies
No we're not, thats pure plug bull
Always pushing that we formed an image

Glory Glory Hallelu
Glory for Plug One and Two
But that glory's been denied
By condescending dookie eyes
People think they diss my person
By stating I'm darkly packed
I know this so I point at Q-Tip
And he states, "Black is Black"
Mirror mirror on the wall
Shovel chestnuts in my path
Just keep all nuts twisting up
So I don't get an aftermath
But if I do I'll calmly punch them
In the 4th day of July
Cause they tried to mess with third degree
That's me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I
It's just me myself and I

Fun fact: this song was written as a joke because the record company wanted a radio song. They made it to fail but it was one of their greatest hits.

Congratulations to De La Soul!! They own all of their masters of their classic albums from Tommy Boy Records!!

I remember years ago when they were about to put out a new release, they released their entire catalogue for free on their website for a single day.

Really?! I came here because I couldn't find any of their old shit on Spotify, and found out about the dispute.

This song got me through some tough times in highschool. I was one of three black kids in an all white school district trying to find my own identity in the eighties. This song reminded me it was okay to be something different.
