For the best part of two decades, Steve Parry’s avant-garde guitar explorations under the name hwyl nofio have travelled within the deepest recesses of experimental/improvised music, and created a powerful body of work. Off The Map sees frequent hwyl nofio collaborator and renowned Danish guitarist Fredrik Soegaard join Parry in a series of guitar abstractions that galvanize the notion of what is possible within experimental fields. The album is a collision of human energies refracted through intricate and extreme concepts in partnership, Parry’s opaque use of treated acoustic/electric guitars beam and flare, their dolorous, human edges contrasting sharply with Soegaards mathematical frameworks: his high-wire uses of a MIDI fractal converter within guitar structures are unprecedented and truly extraordinary. Dolorous tamboura and electronic accumulations coarse with febrile harmony, their easeful and inquisitive tangents imbue the album with an ominous beauty. Off The Map is challenging, intimidating and rewarding in every way possible.
