Here is the irrefutable fact that this song was not composed by Harry Belafonte.
With all due respect to him, he had a lovely voice and he did sing a few calypso songs but he mainly composed and sang mainly Jamaican folk songs.

Lord Caresser was born in Trinidad and as above information says he lived
from 1912 to 1947. Harry was born 1st March 1927.

CARESSER'S real name was Rufus Callender.

As far as I know Belafonte never came to Trinidad prior to its Grandiose Carnival Festival
to compete against the Calypso singers for the ROAD MARCH KING TITLE.
This prize was won more times than any of the long list of Calypsonians by
LORD KITCHENER (Aldwyn Roberts) followed by THE MIGHTY SPARROW (Slinger Francisco).
These guys can compose a Calypso song off the cuff and sing it on the spot.
That is not easy. Check out KITCH singing GUITAR PAN and PAN IN A MINOR on UTube.,
then check out as one example RENEGADES steelband playing these tunes.

The road march is determined by the choice of the Gigantic Steelbands (150 to 200 players) and Brass Bands. The song that is played most is determined as the Road March.
Of hundreds of steelbands in Trinidad only 12 are chosen for the Grand finale' on the
Saturday prior to the beginning of the Carnival on Monday and Tuesday.
That competition is called PANorama.

HISTORICAL FACT: CALYPSO originated in TRINIDAD and TOBAGO as well
steel drums converted into musical instruments.
TWO of the principal names behind this are ELLIE MANNETTE and
WINSTON 'SPREE' SIMON. (Ellie was a member of INVADERS steelband)
He is sometimes referred to as the 'STRADIVARIUS' of 'PAN'.
The reason for this that PANS that he made has a beautiful sound.

If you have a good sound system or a quality pair of earphones hitched up to your PC, just go to Utube and check out the PANORAMA finals going back as far as 20 years or more.

Finally there are different types of PANS.., First pans are the equivalent to the
first violins in a symphony orchestra. Second pans - second violins and violas.
Guitar pans generally come in pairs and the player 'strums' chords like a guitar.
The above covers the upper score of a music composition.
Next the CELLO pans (pronounce CHELLO) They would play the HIGHER base notes.
These generally come in sets of 4 or 5 drums. They are usually 3/4 length.
and the DOUBLE BASES play the DEEP DOWN lower base notes and come in sets of
at least 6 and up to 9 Full length drums each with 2 and up to 4 notes on each.

If you like steel drum music just take your time and check out some the big names;

ie: INVADERS. SILVERSTARS. DESPERADOES. TRINIDAD ALL STARS. RENEGADES.
DIXIELAND. EXODUS. MELODIANS. MERRY TONES. PAMBERI. PHASE II PAN GROOVE.
PAN KNIGHTS. REDEMPTION SOUND SETTERS. SKIFFLE BUNCH. CAVALIERS.
STEEL XPLOSION. SFORZATA. STARLIFT. TROPICAL ANGEL HARPS. and
WEST SIDE SYMPHONY.

My enthusiasm is based on the fact that I am also a musician..,
I am a violinist.., my main instrument is over 200 years old.
I also have two electric violins., one has five strings (E.A.D.G and C)
the beauty with the last one is that it is a combination of both violin and viola
but same size as a violin which makes it easier to play.
(Violin strings are E.A.D.G and a Viola A.D.G.C.)
I started to learn at the age of 7 which is late by today's standard. I have a number of
friends that are also musicians and we used to get together at least once a year and have
fun playing a bit of everything.., sacred music., jazz, popular songs and light classical.
Since the COVID plague hit we have had to postpone that for a while.

Well bye for now.., hope you like the info above.

Unforgettable. It's a shame that musicians like him never really made it.

I remember my mom who was taking a folk guitar class in the 60s singing this song.I have not heard it for almost 50 years and amazingly I remembered most of it.A moving song.

Brilliant . Perfect diction and lyrics in true calypso styling along with a true lesson of British history. It's worth Caressing .

Now it's Harry -- it's love love alone that caused poor Harry to loose his home.

Dr Spaseebo

More like rank stupidity that he allowed himself to be trapped by the ultra-narcissist Meghan Markle. And WHAT a mess they are in now ! Hopeless. Hapless.

I am afraid I do not know where to find stuff online (that you don't have to buy). However, I can recommend other calypsonians: Wilmoth Houdini, Lord Executor, Roaring Lion, Atilla the Hun, Mighty Sparrow, Lord Kitchener, Lord Nelson, Terror, Bomber, Chalkdust, Growling Tiger, Calypso Rose, Lord and Lady Irie, Sniper, Penguin, Tobago Crusoe... Just to name a few. Make sure to add calypso or kaiso in the searches you do or you may end up looking at the history for the real Attila the Hun. :)

I didn't know this calypsonian's name until now, but I like that I can listen to 1930s era calypso music.Great song.

Well its wonderful to know that some one from this era made the lovely calypso. I knew very little about that time, so I am more than grateful for this very beautiful calypso,

nadine ramdoo

Thanks for uploading this, I am happy for many reasons, many see and hear the version by Blelafonte , and assumed he was the original singer. which we know is not true.
