We Broke Free
Metronomy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'll take you out round town,
I swear you'll never witness anything quite as fine,
Thank God the gold is mine,
Thank God the gold is mine,
Thank God the gold is mine,
Where we stood on this hill,
I used to think of you,
That one day we'd get together and here we'd climb,
Thank God the gold is mine
The opening lines of Metronomy's "We Broke Free" are a call to put one's best foot forward and go out on the town. The singer urges the listener to "get yourself fixed up" and promises that they'll witness something extraordinary. The chorus repeats the phrase "Thank God the gold is mine" three times, driving home the idea that the singer feels lucky and grateful to have someone by their side.
The second verse recalls a hill where the singer used to think of the person they're with now. The lyrics suggest that they once hoped to climb it together and that this is now a reality. The repetition of the chorus reinforces the idea that the singer is happy and grateful for this relationship.
One possible interpretation of the song is that it celebrates a romantic relationship that has overcome obstacles and is now a source of joy and gratitude. The reference to "gold" could be seen as a metaphor for a valuable partnership, with the singer expressing a sense of victory or triumph in having found it.

So get yourself fixed up,
Prepare yourself and dress nicely
I'll take you out round town,
I'll show you around the city
I swear you'll never witness anything quite as fine,
I promise that you'll have a wonderful time
Thank God the gold is mine,
I'm grateful for my good fortune
Where we stood on this hill,
The place where we once stood on this hill
I used to think of you,
I thought about you often
That one day we'd get together and here we'd climb,
I imagined that we would reunite and climb this hill together
Thank God the gold is mine
I'm still grateful for my good fortune
